how can you tell if these old K-cars and colts and such are turbocharged? is there a way to read the vin number? i might get one to beat up on rice with and generally treat like shit.

Sounds like a call for Mad Scientist Matt.

I believe the vin has a 3b in it.

Engine code will be the 8th digit of the VIN

A = 2.2 T2 (87-89)
2.2 T3 (91-93)

C = 2.2 T4 (90)

E = 2.2 T1 (84-88)

J = 2.5 T1 (89-91)

89+ have a stronger block

2.5's have a smaller turbo than the rest

T3's are pretty rare, they're DOHC, parts are expensive

T4 has a variable nozzle turbo, also rare

2.2 T1's don't have as good of an intake system, but they do have the better turbo...

Unless you got an intercooled 2.5 they had a Garrett T03
The earlier T1 use the same turbo congfigured different.
The 88 and up T1 manifold stock flows just as well the intercooled 2 piece and 1 piece versions.
87 and before T1 manifolds are good to only 18 PSI then you get boost stacking
T1 is a non intercooled 2.2 or 2.5
TII is intercooled
All 88 and up T1s use the Mitsibishi turbo CRAP!! But the Garrett 88 and up version bolts right on to these cars you just need different oil and coolant hoses, you can get braided one for 110 dollars.
I need help...

The VIN for K-cars won't apply to the Turbo Colt IIRC. They're not really related to the Turbo K-cars, more like a direct ancestor of the Lancer Evolution. It's possible to put the DSM or EVO engines into the older Colts too - just ask Starquest.

Usually, though, if you're looking at the car, the quickest way to check is to pop the hood.
