Other than noise .What are the disadvantages of them and how much HP loss is there if any.

I have read that they can cause problems with knock sensors. However, I've also heard people claim that they don't.

maybe somebody can set the record strait.

Yeah, I can see a gear drive causing problems with the knock sensor. I would not expect them to use up more than 1 hp or so, as gears are pretty efficient and you're not transmitting that much power to begin with, but I could be wrong.

The "noisy" gear drives have a reputation of toying with the knock sensor, but I have not heard of anything with using the "quiet" gears.
