GM Alternators

Anybody else have a problem with GM alternators? My Lumina has over 179,000 miles on it and the only problem it's ever had (other than brakes) has been the alternator. Another one quit last week, leaving me stranded on the highway when the thing locked and the motor wouldn't crank. I figured out, the alternator that's on now is the 5th one for the car. Anybody else have this problem, or anything else that just makes them really mad about their car?
Ah well...maybe I just felt like venting on a nonrelated subject...

alternators on gm vehicles have a 100% faiure rate acording to gm, In the cars life the alternator will fail atleast one time. On a side note. what "brand are you putting on there now? if it is like an autozone alt then your faiure rate will be higher than with a delco reman unit.

the one they put on this time is genuine GM, put on at a dealership service shop (because it was cheaper to get it done there than to have it towed somewhere...burnt through the serpentine belt starting the car again...drove about a mile to the shop with nothin but the motor and just about overheated). The part is guaranteed forever, but it's the labor that will kill in the long run. At this point though with that many miles, this just better be the last one they put on...

if it was done at a dealer with "gm goodwrench service plus" it has a lifetime warranty on parts and labor

nope, lifetime for the part, but the warranty on labor is 12/12,000

The alternator on my Sisters Corsica gave out at about 75k miles.
It went out while sitting at an intersection. The rear bearing spilled its guts, other than that, no other problems.

I sell alot of GM CS-series alternators at Autozone. I've only seen a few come back

was it the one-year starter? Those aren't worth buying. I never even offer them, as you have to swap your old solenoid.

Nope, has a lifetime warranty. Just bolt it on and go (but for how long?)

Ive already had one go out on the 97z24. I guess this was the second one on the car and hope it will last awhile.
On my Honda, I went through several as I had a big system in the car.
On the Ford, again, Ive gone through several alternators too.
I just think its one of those things you have to replace regularly, no matter the brand.
