Heating system problems

My girlfriend has a 98 ford contour (I know not even a fine machine by ford standards). Recently the heater stopped working, it makes a god awful sound sort of like a cross between a perkolating coffee pot and a toronado. No air warm or cold gets up through the vents. The only source of heat is the air conditioning set on max with the temp dial set to warm. The sound gets louder when the fan speed is increased. It sounds almost like it is leaking a massive amount of air from behind the center/passenger side of the dash. Any suggestions? I just hope it is something cheap we are five thousand kinds of poor.

You have no forced air out the vents but the blower still runs? Possible a small critter made a house in the duct? They like the heat from the core.
I am not sure how the mode door system is operated (cable or vacuum) It may by in a tweener position and blocking air flow.

Take the blower motor out and see if there is a restriction.
