Now every soccor-mon and yuppie parent in Niceville, USA will have their kid on drugs, trying to "give them the advantage" over some other kid living down the street. Later in life they'll probably have a crystallized liver or something, will have marked all the other kids for murder, etc.

P, you have pointed out one of the fastest growing and most dangerous problems in our society. In the psych dept. in college, I used to get in trouble all the time because of my open hostility to "The Medical Model" of treatment. Instead putting everyone on drugs, I have always advocated two things:

1. Help people find their skills. I think finding something to do that you enjoy and are good at will trump most of life's miseries. Self-Esteem (short of arrogance) counters most things.

2. Our society is pretty screwed. There is whole lot of people who have absolutely no clue what is the right way and what is the wrong way to treat other people. I think a lot of what is identified as so-called "depression" is due to people internalizing and blaming themselves for the nasty behavior of others (especially in suburbia). Instead of focusing on teaching citizenship (as was so important when I started grade school), the cult of "individuality" without regard to responsibility to others rules. This philosophy (thanks again, liberal scum) is divisive and creates the social isolation that has led to this wave social isolation and rampant sociopathic behavior. The end result: massive diagnoses of depression and huge profits for drug companies with a vested interest in helping this whole nasty thing along. We need a return to community and neighborhood values.

I agree totally.

I think the best commercial is the one for orlando that has a guy who says hes from the pharmaceutical industry thanking people for overworking themselves and if they are unhappy, that it can be fixed with a little pill.

the commercial basically implies that people need to take a freaking vacation.

actually there was an episode of ER that sent a message that there are alot of drug companies out there who are hiding side effects and pushing out pills to hospitals and doctors that are dangerous.

My wife had an episode with zoloft. her ob-gyn prescribed it to her after having our last baby, hoping it would help her with her OCD. It didn't, and when my wife started having some side effects (no-impulse control, and night blindness) they said she had to be weened off and someone had to watch her 24/7 while she went off of it, because 1% of the people going off of it had psychotic episodes and either killed themselves or others around them 1% - that sounds small, but that 1 in 100, 10 in 1000.... if there are 2 million people taking zoloft and decide to go off of it, on average 2 thousand people will either kill themselves or someone they love.

what pisses me off, is the poor kid who is getting this stuff from mom or dad, and taking it because they asked him to. The poor innocent kid taking those drugs, it's criminal.

Again, the cult of the divine individual I think has created parents that are too narcissistic to listen to their children. If you can't be bothered to listen to your spouse (as seems the case at least 50% of time), how can you be bothered to listen to your kids?
