One of my co-workers has been missing since mid-January. I've known this guy since I moved here 4 years ago. This is the first time something of this sort has happened to someone I knew. He was an avid Quad and stockcar racer. It just makes you hate people.

Missing airman's remains found

Body pulled from tank on ranch at San Angelo

SAN ANGELO - A body recovered Sunday from a stock tank on a ranch near San Angelo was that of missing Dyess Air Force Base Staff Sgt. Michael Leslie Severance, his stepsister said Monday.

Weighted with cinderblocks, the body was found in 10 to 20 feet of water in a tank 15 miles northeast of San Angelo. The death has been ruled a homicide.

Severance, who lived in San Angelo but was assigned to Dyess, in Abilene 90 miles to the northeast, had been missing since Jan. 15.

Nicole Leighton, Severance's stepsister, said Air Force officials contacted her family Sunday night saying Severance's body had been found.

''He is deceased,'' Leighton said by telephone in Maine.

Lt. Brandon Pollacheck, a Dyess spokesman, said he could not confirm the family had been contacted.

The Dyess Office of Special Investigations was one of several agencies represented Sunday when Texas Department of Public Safety divers, acting on a tip, recovered the body. Six divers searched about four hours before finding the badly decomposed corpse, officials said.

The Tom Green County Sheriff's Office took the body to the Medical Examiner's Office in Lubbock for identification. A preliminary report is expected today.

Identifying the body through dental records could take up to six months, said Justice of the Peace Eddie Howard, who pronounced the man dead.

''The death, right now, is being ruled a homicide because it wasn't an accidental drowning,'' Howard said.

At the time of his disappearance Severance, 24, was on leave to visit family in Maine, but never arrived, family friend Heather Whitney told the Bangor Daily News.

According to a report that Severance's wife Wendy filed with San Angelo police, the airman had been behaving ''out of character'' prior to his disappearance.

A benefit dance and raffle in Maine to help the family find Severance has been in the works since last week, Whitney said Monday. To date, Whitney said she has sold more than 100 tickets. Whitney said the dance, scheduled for March 19, will go on.

''Like any family in this situation, they're really upset, along with the whole community,'' Whitney said. ''This has shaken up the community pretty bad.''

Severance, who was married four months ago, has a 5-month old son, Shane, Leighton said.

Missing airman's wife arrested

Posted 11:57 a.m. Texas Rangers arrested Wendi Davidson of San Angelo late Monday in connection with the disappearance of her husband, Michael Leslie Severance.

Davidson is being held in lieu of $50,000 bond at the Tom Green County jail on a charge of tampering with evidence.

Severance, an airman stationed at Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene, 90 northeast of San Angelo, was reported missing Jan. 15. A body weighted with cinderblocks was recovered Sunday at a ranch near San Angelo.

In seeking an arrest warrant, Texas Ranger Shawn Palmer filed an affidavit in Tom Green County Justice of the Peace Eddie Howard’s office that said Davidson had access to and visited the ranch.

Severance’s stepsister said authorities have told the family they believe the body was that of Severance. The badly decomposed corpse has been sent to Lubbock for identification.
