'98 Camaro LS1's can be had for around $7,000 - $9,000. Add a 3500 stall (or bigger), headers, lid & sticky tires along with some free mods and weight reduction and you can have a 11 sec car!

It's hard to go wrong with anything American, RWD, V8 powered, and under two tons. Fox-body Mustangs, like Evil mentioned, are an obvious choice. '80s Thunderbirds, Cougars, and even Fairmonts are so similar underneath that it's easy to put in the parts that made the Mustang 5.0 special, or better aftermarket parts. You can work with a 3rd generation F-body ('82-'92 Camaro or Firebird) if you prefer GM power. Chrysler fans will either have to reach further back into the past to get a V8 powered Duster, Dart, Aspen, Volare, Valiant, or the like, or go battle the imports on their own turf using the 2.2 Turbo found in the FWD Charger, certain K-car varients, and even a few Omnis. Don't laugh, I've personally seen an 11 second Omni. Speaking of turbo four-bangers, the Diamond Stars (Eclipse, Talon, Laser) aren't bad for drag racing either. Other imports that can drag race reasonably well and can be found on your budget include the Toyota Supra, Nissan 300ZX, and Mitsubishi Starion - get the turbo version for any of those three.

That's if you want to keep the original engine. Swapping opens up a huge range of possibilities. You can stuff a Chevy V8 into an S10, RX-7, or even more unlikely cars. Chevettes can accomodate a surprising range of power plants. Many of the American V8 cars can take even bigger motors, such as a 454 powered Camaro or a 440 Wedge in an Aspen. If you can find a Toyota Starlet, this is one of the lightest RWD cars ever made and can perform with all sorts of engine swaps. I've once seen one of these with a Mazda rotary, which looked downright scary.

I personally don't care for them, butt, I YOUR case I would go with a CHEVY. They are CHEAP and parts are everywhere.

Just get a model that does't need to be smogged.

I saw a Dodge Dakota for sale in St. Augustine(FL) today. No price was on it, but the windshield had a shoe polish sign one it... "FOR SALE: 440 Big Block" is all it said. It was about a 1992 model and I'd bet it's goin' for a low price. Didn't look bad either, deep(not real dark) blue.

I prefer Mustangs and would look for an 87-89 model because it can be inexpensive, have a tilt wheel, and has the last style front and rear end of the Fox body Mustang.

While looking for a newer truck, I spotted two different 2002 Camaro's, both V6 models and both were stickered well over 10K. That shocked me. I'm sure a Z/28 can be found for that price and in good condition.

only if you're a midget. Ever been in one of those things? My friend had an '83 and it was tiny. He's 5'9'' and kept hitting his head on the rearview mirror.

back in HS a couple of my friends had rx-7's, an 86 and a 90. They were both well over 6'.

I had a g/f who owned an 80something model, I think it was an 86. I remember that car being a pretty tight fit. I can't remember the same about the g/f.

I am truly sorry. I'm sure they're a fun car, just a pain to sit in. My Celica, on the other hand, is VERY roomy compared to the RX.....

I can attest to that. I dunno how many times I crammed in the back seat of that 86.
