Pics of my nude engine!

Thought I'd better go and check up and see how little had been done this week, threw the camera in the car as I hadn't taken any photos of it lately.

We've been having some problems with getting the roller-tip rockers to fit properly. Mechanic has ordered some longer pushrods which should hopefully do the trick.

Anyway, here's how she stands at the moment.

Yep, definitely a 290!

The oiling mod.

The Comp Cams roller-tip rockers.

Thought I'd throw on the E'brock Performer and Offy rocker covers so it looked a little more like an engine.

I sat around for a while making broom broom noises, then left.

Great shots Broot, thanx for posting em. Everyone needs a hobby or three, and this one looks like fun. I may not be current with the project, but what kind of heads are those, are they stock AMC, and if so what has been done to em, if anything? Pistons? Cam, where in the heck do you find a performance cam for an AMC? Actually there may be a stock of em left over from the Mark Donahue Trans Am racing days. The 290 "OBVIOUSLY" was able to run with the best of em on the road racing circuits. Intake?? Give us some specs on that project, and what are you looking for regarding final output, etc.

I don't know anyone else hot rodding an AMC product, and as a matter of fact, I don't even know of anyone who has one, let alone, one that's running fast or slow. Pretty eccentric, guy.. Looks like fun.

Nice pics. What's that engine going in?

Posted by: Brootal

I really have been neglecting you guys. Sorry...

The engine is the same one that was powering my Rambler American. Please see www.the-rumbler.com for everything you ever wanted to know about my car.

Specs on the engine are as follows;
290 block (obviously)
Bored .125" over (not that's not a misprint, that's 1/8 of an inch!)
Total capacity is around 309 cubes now.
Heads are stock 343 units that came from the factory with 1.6/2.02 valves
Cam is from 'Crow Cams' and was just a warm street grind, nothing fancy.
Intake is a HPC coated Edelbrock Performer AMC
Will probably run a 600 Edelbrock carb, but plans are to run Throttle Body Injection.
Exhaust is HPC coated stock manifolds. Can't afford that fancy shit!

Hopefully the SOB will run faster than before. IT BETTER!!!

Still sounds like it will make good power. Have fun with it. Most people into "muscle cars" will appreciate all the work for what it is. That's the goal, eh!

there should be some good speed equipment around for that engine since Mark Donahue had all his racing success with them!

Here's another link, not too many wins, but they did have their way with the big guys for a few years.

and of course, they have AMC all over Mark Donahue here
http://www.historictransam.com/Orig...MarkDonohue.htm

I saw him race, by the way, and he was GOOD, very good. I was there the day he broke the world closed track speed record at Talledega, in a Porsche 917 that had a thousand horsepower. Roger Penske flew him in with a chopper, Mark got into the 917 and broke the world record on his first lap at full speed, and then broke it three more passes, pulled into the pits, and choppered out to a race at Watkins Glenn. Too bad he didn't have a spare seat in the chopper, as I would have liked to see that race more than the one I was at (GTU and IMSA series)

It was always such a coup, that AMC was able to get Mark Donahue to race for them, because whoever he raced for was going to be a winner, sooner or later.

great project, thanx for sharing the info,

Mr. P
