The Washington buzz is that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has support for a White House run in 2008 ["'Condistas picture Rice in '08 presidential race," News, Feb. 26].
This could be a very bad news flash for Hillary Clinton. And the buzz really received a boost when Siena College in New York State issued the results of a poll showing big support for Rice for a run in 2008.
Of course, the same poll showed even greater support for Hillary Rodham Clinton. I can maybe buy that among young women, but I don't see support for her among members of my gender.
I do not see Hillary as a role model for anyone, let alone as president. Still fresh in my mind are the Clinton administration scandals of which she was a part. She intruded on high-level meetings when Bill was president. She tried to sell her stand- by-your-man routine during the Monica Lewinsky scandal. Her usual modus operandi is to see which way the political winds are blowing and then tell us where she stands. In order to give Rice a run for her money, Clinton will have to do much better than that.
What assets qualify Rice for the Oval Office? She was the president's national security adviser, possesses a Ph.D. and now she is secretary of state. Not to mention the fact that, in her recent confirmation hearings, she made Barbara Boxer look like the ignorant, boorish, plodding, poor excuse for one of our senators that Boxer truly is.
I can visualize Rice going toe to toe against any man in a similar fashion. She is black, female, not unattractive, and it is said that she displays a great sense of humor and is a lot of fun. It's time for Hillary Clinton to take off the gloves. She has a formidable opponent.
