Advance my timming?

How much can I advance my timming on a slightly modified 1972 8:5 454cid engine, the stock timming at idel is at 8 degrees.
I have been adding performance parts on my Caprice, and have been tunning it to improve its launch. I've been told to advance it to 12 deg. at idel, because the stock setting is only for economy.

Depends on what sort of gas you're running and how modified is "slightly modified." You might want to take a look at these two threads on another board:

I know, they're for EFI systems that have a lot more adjustability, so some of this doesn't apply to a distributor. However, they give you an idea of something to shoot for, and an idea of where your timing should be at both idle and its maximum total timing.

Sure, the dyno tuning they suggest is expensive. In a pinch, you can take it to the dragstrip and see which setting gets you the best times.
