Nitrous - Wet or Dry????

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: JustaV6

Considering going the inexpensive quick HP route with the GT... dont think ill be able to afford any supercharging for a long time, and i'd like to be a little quicker in the 1/4 mile. 13.8-14.2 isnt gonna cut it. I'd like a high 12-low 13 second car after bolt-ons and with a safe probably 100 shot...

my question, what nitrous is the safest for a N/A 2V 4.6 motor???

Wet or Dry?? what kind is safest and why???

This will only be used occasionally on the track, other than that, it will do nothing but take up trunk space...

thanks for the replies in advance~

A properly tuned Wet shot and you have little to worry about

why wet? (still a complete noob at nitrous)

i was looking into the SCT tune to go along with a nitrous kit...

Wet or Dry...whatever's clever.

With the wet system, like NX, the fuel comes right off the schraeder valve to atomize with the spray. A 100 shot would be perfect with a wet system.

With a dry shot, you're spraying all over the MAF, and making the car spike the injectors to add to the nitrous.

If you just want a 100hp wet shot, I'd suggest an NX kit (which I think I can get you for pretty cheap) Too big of a wet shot results in the gasoline falling out of the nitrous/fuel mixture and puddles in the intake...Nitrous fuel mixture goes way lean, Intake exits center stage, hood.

The dry shot doesn't have that problem with puddling, BUT you are putting the injectors through some serious stuff to make it all work out right.

According to NOS every 1hp gain from nitrous requires 0.5lb per hour additional fuel flow.

So for a 40hp shot that would equate to 20addl #'s an hour.

A rising rate fuel pressure regulator should be able to compensate adequately, but will make the car run rich in non NOS injection situations.

IMO, a simple 50hp wet system is much preferred because it automatically injects the neccesary additional fuel in exactly the correct proportion, and does not affect the engines baseline tune. In order to supply the needed fuel the fuel fitting on the fuel rail should be tapped/threaded and will provide enough fuel for a wet shot system of up to 100hp.

50-100hp tunable nitrous wet kits are available new for about $300-$350, and can be had on ebay used for significantly less.

thanks for the replies guys...

with the nitrous, i would need bigger injectors correct?

and P, what brand would you suggest for a 50-100 adjustable?

Posted by: Mr. P

I wouldn't make a recommendation, because although I have an opinion, eveyone has one and mine isn't as informed as say, the Mustang Club. I'd check with a club or a membership where there is a consensus of what's best for your particular car. Surely someone out there has done this allready, and can tell you how much it will cost, and what kind of times are available, etc.

Better yet, call the manufacturer and talk to their tech guys. Check out these guys http://www.holley.com/index.asp?division=Nos

regards, Mr. P

Posted by: JustaV6

cool deal... yea, i'm part of a stang club, but only 2 or 3 guys have nitrous and they are never around

figured some MMC guys would have some opinions

Posted by: Mr. P

I have a buddy in Philly who has a 83 928 and he's getting ready to do a wet installation. What might work for that car might not do so well in another, and vice versa. I would suspect you could hunt down someone at the manufacturer's tech department that would tell you eveything you would really need to know.

will do... a few guys recommended a 50-125hp adjustable wet kit from NX (nitrous express) ...gonna research this a bit...

Posted by: VETTKLR

NX is the straight poop.

Cutting edge, state of the art stuff.

you'll never be able to even feel a 50 shot on a V-8, so toss those jets

oh yeah...MT ET Radials fo sheezy.

Posted by: LS1JAY

Stay away from NOS (NX is much better) and go with a 125 dry shot and you should do great. JMO.

I would recommend an NX stage 1 single nozzle wet kit, like I have on my Mach 1...and had on my '93 before switching to a plate this year for more HP.

A 100hp "tune-up" that you can really feel... I use a diablo predator and AEM wideband to keep tabs on the state of tune, using the factory tune with some fuel enrichment (needed with the C&L MAF system) via the predator for a verified 12.5-12.8:1 NA and 11.8-12.0:1 with the 100hp jets. You should also consider a digital RPM window switch

I sell NX single nozzle kits w/ 10lb. bottle for $500 shipped ($550 w/ 15lb.) and GenX-2 kits for $300 shipped... if you can find it cheaper than that, go with it!

Like the guys said... go with NX Top notch stuff...

excellent info, thanks man...

what is the difference between the single nozzle kit and the GenX-2 kit? why is one so much cheaper?

The GenX-2 is an upgrade to supplement the single nozzle kit. The upgrade includes a bottle heater, purge valve, nitrous press. gauge, fuel press. safety switch, NHRA legal bottle fitting and blow down tube. You can get by without the upgrade, but it is highly recommended for a safer, more consistent and powerful system with the extra gadgets.

I like the wet kits better because they are their own stand alone air/fuel delivery system and work off the stock fuel press... they hit harder... don't have to rely on maxing out the stock injector by boosting fuel pressure. In terms of a stock vehicle, the wet kits works best. I understand there are some really trick dry systems, but they require alot bigger fuel pumps and injectors to work properly... with a bolt-on mustang looking for an additional 100-150whp you can't beat the simplicity, quality, and functionality of an NX stage 1 single nozzle system, especially for the price.

thanks, ill definately be in touch with you when i decide to pull the trigger on ordering a system... and if i do get it, i'd get EVERYTHING done right. I want the kit to be as safe as humanly possible where can i get the window switch from??? does that come with either setup?

noticed you are in central illinois too... i'm up in chicago heh

Posted by: VETTKLR

The best deal on window switches is through Summit for around $85, I think.

Anybody else's window switches are probably MSD's (NOS's box looks identical) for waaay more cash

The ONLY way to fly is with MSD's digital RPM window switch (MSD p/n 8969), as it does away with the RPM "pills" and works with coil-on-plug ignitions (99-up Mustangs). The standard window switch that VETTEKLR mentioned will not work on 99-up mustangs unless it's the "modified" version like what NX offers, that'll read one cyl./coil pack. Either way, the digital one is better since you don't have to buy pills/chips.

$89 and some change...
Skumitracing.com
Jugs.com

I keep the single nozzle systems and GenX-2 kits in stock, so whenever you're ready let me know...

Thanks,

Damn, that is nice!

Hey dude, I think I bought an Edelbrock Water Pump off of you a while back for my 408...seems like it anyway.

Out of curiosity, how good of a deal can you cut JustaV6 for a system along with the GenX2?

Posted by: LS1 Mopar Turbo

How about kits for an LS1, now that I have the drivetrain to handle it.

I have the above in stock, ready to ship for EFI Ford applications... I would have to order a MAF kit for the LS1, PM for quote. List is $1266 and Jobber is $1028... I can do alot better than that. As far as the stage 1/single nozzle system goes for GM or Dodge, the price is the same as the above quote. List on the single nozzle system is $813, Jobber $660... Jugs & Skumit sell them for $589.xx last I checked, and like $389 I believe on the GenX-2 upgrade.

I once sold an Edelbrock water pump, so it would be possible I might have been the guy... crazy. Small world, VETTKLR, and btw the chick in your sig is killin' me, damn-it... can't stop staring... it's distracting actually...

Posted by: crazy camaro

i've had both wet and dry kits on my car and currently run a zex direct port kit and i gotta say i'd never go back to a dry kit because it fucked up my o2 and my air temp sensor.Wet is definetly the way to go for the main reason each cylinder is getting a controled equal flow of nitrous and air/fuel is easier to monitor this way.

The chick is his wife. I took that film when she was over at my place. Nice girl, strange she's hanging out with him most of the time, eh?

Since this thread is up and active, I'm interested in what system you would recommend for a 1983 928 4.7 liter. A buddy and I are both thinking of putting systems on our almost identical cars.

Mr. P

Posted by: ultraflo

She's got a fine ass, whoever she belongs to...

As far as an '83 928 Porsche is concerned; if it's fuel injected, as I assume it is, then the Import EFI single nozzle system would work.

It's injected L-Jetronic with injection right where the air stream enters the head. I'll check out the system you noted. Lemme know if you have any other comments, model numbers, techniques, etc.

Hell yeah, she came back with a rash, and goat hair all over her back. :mrp:

Hey ultraflo, would there be any advantage of swapping a Gemini Stage 6 (low-pressure with spraybars) for one of the newer style plates?

Posted by: Mr. P

That's not goat hair, that's the carpet fibers from my 928. That's no rash either, it's a carpet burn, hah hah

Posted by: VETTKLR

Whoa...I'd keep that shiny stuff in the back of my hatch instead of some old, goofy bottle of dope!

If you are looking for the inexpensive route you can put together a dry kit for very cheap. You don't need a tune for such a small shot of nitrous either.

I bought this kit from Compucar for about $400 to use on my rental car: http://www.compucarnitrous.com/TEST/kits/hidden10lb.htm. It's very simple to hook up and has 5 pills from 20-100hp. You could put togather the same kit for probably less than $200. Is your car an auto or manual?

The Phase 3 spraybarless design plates have better distribution and atomization. Eliminating the spray bars makes for a cleaner plate also, nothing in the way of the incoming air/fuel charge (or just air for EFI), and easier to work with since you don't risk damaging the bars in any way (cuz there ain't none!).

My car is a 5 speed.... haha you used it on a rental car? lol

but honestly, if i'm gonna do this route, i'm gonna do it right and get EVERYTHING all at once and get the system as safe as possible. I still havent decided what to do, local performance shop (Sutton) has a deal usually 2 times per year for a month where they do a complete install with a tune on either a Paxton Novi or a Vortech blower for just around 4K...

hmm... blower + nitrous hahaha

wet. safer.

Yeah I used it on my rental, hahaha. This kit would suck for a car with a manual trans. If you want to get a safer kit wet is probably what you're after.
