Shotgun motor

Because of the engines massive alloy heads along with it's very large intake and exhaust ports....

That motor never really reached it's street potential because it was so detuned. It was built only for one purpose, to compete with the Chrysler 426 Hemi, and win. It did.

In full race form it actually delivered more wins for FoMoCo, even after the advent of the Superbird. Ford countered with the Talledega body style and eventually this monster motor. The winged wars ended with Ford holding a narrow margine of victory.

Since this motor was build "only" for the track, naturally Ford had to put some on the street in order to qualify. The motor was very fast, but compared to it's full race rating, the rating we got for the street was kind of a disappointment. Make no mistake about it, it could burn rubber for two blocks, but Ford really didn't care about making a statement on the streets, they wanted to dominate NASCAR.

Today if you have one of these monsters, you have something that's able to be pushed waaaaay up the horsepower range, and a very rare piece of historic hardware. As for why they called it the "shotgun", well I guess you'll have to ask the cough cough, "marketing department".
