Monster H.P. & Street Driven?

Is it possible to have a car that's putting out 600-800 pounds of torque & same horse power, be able to be street driven?

What would be some of the problems with the high H.P. car, like in stop and go traffic?

Thanks for the help .

Sure, it's possible, but not very practicle. Problems would be gas milage, possible over heating (depending on weather and conditions) and noise just to name a few. I've seen 1,000+ hp cars on the street, but they aren't usually daily drivers. You could do it with a turbo Supra, or a LS1 a lot easier than an old school carbed motor though. There was a daily driven LS1 TT Vette dipping in the 8's, and a few Supras too.

buddy of ours runs a 71 buick with about 1100 at the wheels on the street... only problem he has...is traction haha no overheating problems at all

i would think it would depend on how you made that kind of power.

Traction could be a big issue, good to hear that it can be done. Interesting to hear the idea, that it could be done with a non carberated engine.

yeah robs buick is a Procharged 502, dart pro 1 alum heads/intake

Decent sized motor with a bit of boost on it, sure, it's possible. Just gotta spend the money to do it right.

As for potential problems, I'd say overheating would be the biggest concern, and tuning. Tuning for max power is relatively easy compared to tuning for good idle/drivability characteristics. Plenty easy to foul out spark plugs, etc... by just putting around with a big power motor.

I agree about the money issue, I have found out that not all high cost parts are the best. When I look to buy parts I often look at the specs and design.
I plan on building a 500+ HP street driven car, it will still have mufflers and it will be legal. I do want the fastest car on the street like every one else that love's to build their own custom motor/car. I just have to find the balance between power and comfortable performance, like a smooth idle.

One of the toughest cars in Oz is Mark Hayes's Torana.

It runs in the sevens and makes over 1200hp, naturally aspirated, but on the giggle gas (I think). It's also got a 540-cube big-block Chev and is street driven, although not that often.

It's also a seriously nice car and just happens to be painted the same colour as the Rumbler. Maybe that's why it's so fast.

On the Megasquirt forums, we've got a member who has a 1,000 horsepower pickup truck with twin turbo LS1 power. He recently won his class in Hot Rod Magazine's Drag Week. Not only did he drive it all the way across the United States, but he did this pulling a 3,500 lb trailer full of tools that it turned out he never needed. The only thing that broke during Drag Week were the lug studs on the rear wheels. He also reported that it got comparable mileage to a stocker, thanks to careful tuning and wideband oxygen sensors. Ironically, he caught a competitor trailering a car with a similar-looking (but stock) pickup.

I can't see doing this with an old-school carbed engine, though.

Oh yes a 1000 (LS1) horses and long distance travel to the drag strip, that is bad ass ! The Torana looks great and has great numbers, must be a rare model, amazing that it is street driven.
