Rising to the Challenger: Detroit auto show debut for Dodge muscle coupe concept

To all those purists who still can’t forgive Dodge for building a four-door Charger, here’s your answer: the 2006 Dodge Challenger concept. The Dodge boys released a sketch of the car to the world, but we obtained these exclusive spy photos of the car, which will premiere at the North American International Auto Show in January in Detroit.

Challenger draws on the 1970 model as the icon of the series, says Tom Tremont of Chrysler’s Pacifica studio in California. But instead of merely recreating that car, designers tried to build the Challenger most people see in their mind’s eye, without imperfections like the tucked under wheels and long front overhang of the old car. At the same time, the concept incorporates distinctive Challenger cues like the rear fender kick, wide mouth front end, functional hood scoops and rectangular exhaust tips.

Built on a shortened Chrysler 300/Dodge Charger chassis (116-inch wheelbase vs. 120 inches), the Challenger gets a 6.1-liter Hemi hooked to a six-speed manual transmission with a pistol grip shifter.

All that’s left to ponder is “will they build it?” With all the hardware in place and a primed marketplace, we can’t see why Dodge wouldn’t rise to this challenge.

they f#cked up the Charger concept from a few years ago, hopefully they dont do the same with this one

I remember that thing, I actually like this new one better.
One of my buddies, a die-hard Mopar fan told me that when Daimler took over Chrysler they killed off all of the concepts they had come up with. Thats prolly why they never built it. It does look alot like a stratus though.

That Challenger looks like a bad motherfucker... if they price it right, I'd DEFINITELY consider one.

they'll fuck it up... either ugly, make it weigh 2 tons, or shitty shifting transmission. hell, they might go for all 3 on this one.

I like the styiling of the new concept. The one that went to production looks like a magnum and stratus mix. Pretty fucking ugly.

If they make that body style challenger, even *I* will look closely. Of course the engine and price have to be right regardless, but I like that one. 6.1L engine, 6spd manual, under 35K and I'll look. I think the Charger looks much better in person than pics, btw. My current favorite non Viper made from that brand though, is the Chrysler 300C.

I like the 1st and 2nd drawings, but the 3rd, 4th and 5th don't do it for me at all. The colors are fine, but the "Dodge-like" grille is not me. I don't care for the fake slats on the fender either. The "shaker" style hood is okay, but I prefer the more subtle version, but it MUST work! I like the photos from AutoWeek though. They just need to optimize the grille, with the ones in the later drawings.

Looks good. I wonder if Dodge will be able to build a decent transmission for it?

Surely they'd use the tried and true Tremec. In this case, probably the T56. It works for the Viper.

What about for the auto?

Posted by: Grape Ape

What automatic?

There's really not much need for an automatic transmission in a car called "Challenger" in the first place. It would be great to have a strong automatic 5spd, or even a 4. They could use one of the light truck transmissions or even the trans used in the 300C, but those might need shift point changes and higher converters.

Personally though, I see no need for an automatic in a 400+hp car. Even the extremely expensive Viper has no auto. Nor did the SN95 Mustang Cobra, or the ZO6 Corvette. I'm not even sure there's an auto available for the NEON SRT4 or the SRT10 pickup. There may not be any "SRT" branded car with an auto. If si, there's surely no need to make one available in the next one. They'd have to offer one at all for any of this to matter though, and I don't see that happening yet.
