Just sitting here reloading an Oracle database. It's quite boring and it's gonna take a while. So I'm surfing the net and looking for rocks to kick and cages to rattle. I haven't rattled this one in a long time so I thought I'd stop by and see what kinda shit would get stirred up.

Just to fill those who don't care in, I'm married now. In the 2 years since I stopped hangin' around here, I went from head lackey to Lead DBA at one job and got a second job as a diesel mechanic to pay the bills because the wife was in a car accident and has been out of work. So I still do the computer nerd stuff but now I get to fix, drive and play with commercial trucks and heavy equipment!

Welcome Back John! It has been awhile. What are you rolling in these days.
EDIT: Oh man I am sorry to hear Emily was in an accident!

Cool that you're a DBA. I became a DBA as well a couple years ago...MS SQL though. I'm in the middle of transitioning from an application based interface to a web-based...This project has been going on for nearly 2 years already. I wish our Finance Dept would get their asses in gear already.

Hey, John. Welcome back. Oddly enough, I've been dabling in database stuff at work too.

Sorry to hear Emily was injured. She's really a sweet woman and it's too bad that this happened to her.

Life sucks. Money is tight so I haven't done anything to any vehicle except repairs. I paid cash for my wedding, all $26K of it and that tapped my savings dry. Got married last year and Emily broke her ankle. After she got off of that, she was fired from her job. She found a new one. The day after she got the job and worked her first day at orientation, she got her car inspected, it passed, she went and picked up her friend and then some dumb bitch rear-ended her. The car was worth about $4200 and the damages this stupid bitch did to the vehicle came out to just under $4K. She was this >< close to getting the car totalled which would have sucked. At the time, I still owed $3K on it. I would have had nothing to buy a new car with. On top of that, she now has two pinched nerves, one in her neck and one in her shoulder. She's been out of work since last March and was denied for disability and lost her job because of the accident. It took some convincing but she is suing because the insurance company has fucked me over royally.

I had a friend working at a diesel repair shop and he's the shop manager/lead tech. He was calling me up and asking me to come down and help him out because the assmonkey he had working with him and his shop hand were both fucking around and bugging out on him when he needed them to do work. So I was going to help him so he wouldn't be sitting there all night getting work done. I asked him if I could get compensated for my time since I was spending so much time helping him out. His boss found out and asked if I was being paid, my friend said no. His boss said well, talk to Nacy (finance woman, boss's wife) and get him on the payroll. They fired the other two monkeys and I'm working as needed for about $10 an hour under the table. It's mostly engine/hydraulic services, lube jobs and stuff but I've had to re-sleeve a couple engine blocks and rebuilt several cylinder heads. So I've done everything from change oil to rebuild an engine. Diesels aren't that much different than gas. About the only REAL difference is no spark plugs. Fuel injection on these huge engines is mechanical. BTW, ever seen the piston out of a 900+ cubic inch Cummins 6 cylinder? It's like a set of coffee cans!

The DBA stuff means Database Administrator. There were 4 people involved back in August. Then one of them left the company, another got a new job in a different department and the 3rd guy said he didn't want to do anything with it anymore. So that left me as the only person in the position and now I get to do it all by myself. woohoo. I also have to manage 3 Ingres database, 2 Oracle databases and I have to develop a Oracle -> MySQL -> Oracle conversion tool and get a data reduction tool written in-house by our own developers to run with Oracle to work with MySQL. Let me tell you, I'm havin' so much fun here barrels full of monekys don't evny me.

Give my best to Emily.

Good to see you're still kicking John. Best wishes.

I found the RedGreen site about this time last year. I went there on a whim looking to see if they ever made the updates they were supposed to. I was pleasantly surprised!

I'm not really dabling in database work. I kinda got thrust into the position of Lead Database Administrator. It sucks because I'm pulling a disgusting amount of hours at work but it's good because I'm currently working at a skill level two levels above where I am currently placed. Looks good on yearly reviews and usually means big raises, especially if I can pull it off!

As far as teh truck, it's running and sucking down the gas. It ate it's Idle Air control valve last month. That sucked ass. I had to get it towed to the dealer because I couldn't easily fix it myself in the parking lot at the apartment complex. Other than that, it's been running fine. It has some lower fascia damage on the front end from things in the road getting kicked up smacking into the truck though. I'm hoping I can get enough cash together soon to get another Thunderbird and retire the truck from active duty to weekend warrior duty. Gotta replace the Taurus first though. That car has been a champ. 104,000+ miles and no major problems (knock on wood). It's been hit a few times but that can't be counted against the car.
