Im In the market and looking for a car for mostly daily driving and street racing on the side. My question Lt1 or 5.0 thats my choice in the too mustang or camaro/firebird cant afford supercharged cobra or ls1 so its either 5.0 or Lt1. I know for a fact the 5.0 is a real beater ive heard of ppl running 150 shots through there 200k mile mustangs and doing 12s so I know there dependble and powerful and theres a huge market for them so performance is no question, but heres my issue the only really fast 5.0s are the 87 to 93 now dont get me wrong the 94-95 were fast but were heaver and had more restrictions and it seems to me that everyone and there brother has a 87-93 so idk. Now Lt1 I really know squat about them, I like the 93-96 TAs and if i got a lt1 it prob be in a Trans am I just like the style better then the camaro, I know there is a market for the Lt1 as well but how do they hold up? I mean does the tranny go at 100k em i gonna have overheating issues? Tell me what yeah guys know whats the limits of these motors which one has most bang for the buck and is the most dependble of the two, thanks....

They're both fairly able when it comes to taking abuse.
LT1 is a strong engine
700R4 is a strong tranny, but the T5 is relatively weak
the 7.5 is the downfall
5.0 isn't as strong (not even close, really) but good for about 550 at the crank
the AOD is relatively weak, but the T5 ... well, it's still relatively weak
the 8.8 is basically an animal, but I'd still get 31 spline axles, which of course, requires a new differential
The Mustang is lighter
There are mods galore for either car. I think, the Mustang mods are cheaper.
Bang for the buck, still the Mustang
Potential for (reliable) HP, LT1
Of course, all of this goes right out the window, if one has enough money to buy fiberglass parts and engine blocks (and much more).

Ok so what year be my best bet for a Lt1? And give me a better comparison of the tranyies as in reliability, Which car has the better tranny I just read above thread appreciate it but still bit confused. One last thing the firehawk what made a firehawk a firehawk I know it had some engine mods to it, thanks again.

As far as the Firehawk, there are many little things that made it a firehawk. Here's a link about Firehawks. I wouldn't compare a Firehawk to a Mustang (or most F-bodies, for that matter).
As for the trannies; the 700r4 is a good tranny (IE: fair strength and gears). The AOD is weak. T5s are weak.
BTW, I didn't mean to "clear it up" for you with my first reply. It was a bit of a joke, as this comparission has been done countless times. I hope this helps a bit more.

The AOD needs a better valve body like the 700 needs a better converter. I know the AOD isn't terribly strong when stock, but they'll easily handle low 12's. What they can't stand is top end charge. They get too hot too fast and will burn up if held about 115mph+ for any length of time. Mine did make about 8 miles though
If you don't have money for good upgrades, the LT1 would be my choice(T/A only) because it runs well when stock and there isn't several million out there. Otherwise, the Mustang has some serious advantages. It has a serious disadvantage too, these days. Too many owners are looking for more than the real value when they sell. I've seen 93 Mustang LX 5.0 coupes selling in the 5-7K range and if stock, or beaten, ONLY the Cobra/Cobra R is worth more than about 5k. Finding one with low mileage won't likely happen. If it did, expect to pay a mint for it. The LT1, while far fewer exist, sells for less. The reason, LS1!!

Ok so it sounds like a LT1 for sure cause im a hardcore ford mustang fan but i cant see paying out of the ass for a car worth half what they want I see the same thing 80k mile 87-93 gt's goin for like 5-7k dollars, thats way to much. I seen a 89 gt convertible mint new engine tranny really nice but it was like 25k, Im like come on nice car not 25k maybe if it had a blown 347 stroker, lol. Ok so now the better of the two for trannies are the 700r4 but it could use a better converter u guys say is this to achive like 11's cause I just want a nice TA runnin low 13's N/A or maybe a shot of Nos for good measures. And the 700r4 this is a auto right if so idc i actually prefer auto over manual cause now a days having a manual doesent mean youll have the faster car then the guy with the auto, get a chip and your auto shifts perfect and speed limiters removed, exc. What does a stock TA top out at stock then with a chip? Thanks again love the feedback and a 11secranger yeah did help bit more, lol, Thanks.....

Dayam! I haggled a dealer down to 13,500 an a '89 GT. It wasn't a convertible, but it was a much better price! BTW, this happened IN 1989, not '06!

Well, I'd say you don't have to have a converter to run 13s, or 12s for that matter. It just helps. I'd get a different converter for reasons more than that. It changes the around feel of the car, IMO. I'd have the N02 for good measure ... And those pesky Mustangs!
Yes the 700R4 is an automatic. Manual trannies don't have torque converters.

I couldn't tellya, for sure. I wouldn't be surprised to see 140+mph top speed from a stock (LT1) TA. After mods, it's difficult to know. I doubt a chip (alone) would make much difference as far as top speed.

Thanks again An11secranger your helping me out, thanks. I doubt a chip (alone) would make much difference as far as top speed.

All I meant by this is doesent a chip remove speed limiter to allow better top end? Whats the Lt1 TA governed to top out at like 135 I have a 95 matk Vlll Lsc pretty quick they have the cobra motor that the cobra mustangs had in 96 to 98 or whenever they dident put a charger on top, It tops out at like 135 I was told if i get a chip and bipass the limiter it could reach 150+, not bad for a lincoln, lol. I just want a TA cause I think there so nice and I want something little quicker the Mark does a high 14 doent the TA Lt1 do a low 14 high 13 stock? Thanks again....

I just did some quick research (this is old [lt1] stuff) ... A 1993 LT1 powered Z28 {M6} had a top speed of 156mph, according to Car & Driver rag. This indicates, there was no speed limiter in that car (156 just isn't a number I'd expect to see as a limit). So, I guess you won't have to worry about that. It also ran 14.1 @ 101mph.
However, your Mark VIII has very good potential for all around performance!
I'd, seriously, consider modifying that ... Depending on the ultimate goal. I've seen a mark VIII run 11s. Idunno squat about it, but I saw it run, so I know it is possible.
I've been in a few TAs ... I've never been in one as "nice" as a Mark VIII.
Well, nevermind. If I start comparing and throwing in other cars, I'll start about how you would be better off with the LS6 Camaro/TA (which has the potential to obliterate the LT1), etc.

Whao...LS6 Camaro/TA...they put the LS6 in the F-body cars?!
Whao, h/o again...what's a LS6? lol LT1, LS1, LS2, LS7...I'm familiar with those...what's the LS6?

Just in case, you're not kidding ...
Check this.
I'm not a big wikipedia fan (it doesn't seem to be very accurate all the time), but there it is.

Thanks for the link, as I wasn't kidding.
Wow, that's a lot of engines!
So, the LS6 is basically an LS1 with a slightly different block and a different top end? The LS2 seems to be very similar to the LS6, making the same peak numbers it sounds like, just with a better power band.
