over heating and hesitation

This site is great. I learn allot just by reading. Im having troubles with my 86 mercury capri 5.0. Im thinking bad fuel injectors but my car runs hotter than normal and its seems to be loosing horse power and it hesitates when trying to accelerate. Also the car doesnt idle it goes up and down. I replaced the timing chain, termostate, radiator, water pump, antifreeze, fuel filter, spark plugs, air filter, distributor cap, rotor and, the cooling fan. Ive checked my coil and distributor for sloppyness and they check ok. If anyone can help thanx

What's your timing set at? Pull the spout connector and look to see if she's around 12-14°

Might take a look at the voltage on your Throttle Position Sensor (TPS). Stick a needle in the gray wire (3 wires coming off the TPS...I think it's the gray one), then clamp the volt meter to the needle and a good ground. You're looking for somewhere around .99 volts...anything over 1.0 volt will make it act up. I usually set mine around .96 and call it good.

Also, you may take the IAC off and spray the hell out of it with brake cleaner. That'd the little cylidrical lookin thingy bolted on the front of the throttle body. Sometimes, it gets gunked up and needs a little cleaning.

Another thing you might do is pull all 8 plugs and see if they're all the same light gray or cardboard-brown color. If one is black and nasty, you may have an issue with that particular injector.

I ll go ahead and try all that. I did pull the plugs and they where all white. This sucks cause im trying to find time to work on it when I have to drive an hour to work and work 12 hours. Cant get to it but I better find time cause its seems to be getting worse everytime I drive it. Oh the exuast is smelling rich and also started to smell really distgusting like something dead and rotting.

sounds like you may have a bad head gasket

Posted by: mercurycapri

Every thing looked ok. I took off the h pipe thinking cats might be bad. Replaced it with a off road one and the smell is gone and some of the power has come back. Still running way too hot and still low on power. Check the new spark plugs after running allot of miles. They appear ok. They are light brown color. Man ...I just dont know what to do anymore. Starting to run out of money.

hell, it ain't nothin a 100 shot wouldn't fix.

How's the clutch feel?

Posted by: mercurycapri

Feels alright Its brand new. Took care of the over heating. I put cool ice in the coolent. Still can tell that it still is trying to run hot but the additive keeps it from doing that. I also put a coolent temp sensor in it and didnt help. Going to go to the wrecking yard and going to grab all sorts of sensors and, put them on one by one.

Let's talk about the thermostat for a minute...

Did you install a factory replacement (190* or some shit), 180*, 160*?

This stood out to me, for some reason (I have no idea why). This could be caused by something as simple as the ATS.

Jamey is dead on with the idle problem. It is either the TPS or the IAC, or a combination of both. I've fixed the surging idle on several stangs. I set my TPS at .98 and it fixed it even with my B cam.

Uhh...did anyone check to see if the water pump was for a serpentine belt drive application or a V-belt drive application. If I am remembering correctly, the serpentine application has a reverse rotation as opposed to the V-belt application. Either pump will fit the 5.0 block and 86 had both options listed in the parts books but, the serpentine belt routing will turn a V-belt pump backwards and vice-versa. That woudl cause the over-heating.

Also, the IAC can cause the overheating and loss of power problem too by having an either too rich or too lean condition.

Yeah i would say to check the ATS, and your cat.
