Then I could spend all day long just driving.
It's a gorgeous day, everyone else took off so there ain't shit to do. So I took a ride for my lunch break. It's amazing how far you can get in 20-30 minutes of driving back-country roads at extra-legal speeds. Then again, this time of year, the corn is high, at least 7 feet tall. Many of the roads through the farm country are sunken down so the run off goes in the sewers and not the fields. Rounding a bend to a straight with only a few hills and rows of corn towering over the road, you get a kind of tunnel vision.
The only better time to drive is to hit the state forrest areas where the coastal flood plains are. Lots of rivers and cranberry bogs. In the early to mid spring, the blueberries and cranberries are flowering and/or pollenating and it smells great! If you get a nice, cool spring morning, just as the dew is evaporating, you can get some clear, open roads winding through the state forrests. Grab a decent radar detector to warn you of the troopers and rangers and you can get some real nice driving time in. If you are lucky and have a house near the shore or know someone down there, you can top off a few hours of tearing up the roads with a late morning ride out to the inlets for some blue and striper fishing. Just stop by a Wawa and pick up a gallon of water, a bottle of iced tea or Gatorade, a sammich or later along with some chips and a Tastycake peach pie and you're set! When you're done fishing, roll in with the catch of the day, clean it up, grill it up and grab yourself a beer with some fresh blueberries for dessert and just sit back and relax. Pull out the firepit and just get the burn on!
You can do the same thing in the summer but it's a bit hotter and you'll be fishing for flounder/fluke or tuna and you'll get the lovely joy of fresh Jersey silver queen corn, peaches and tomatoes! Damn, I can smell the BBQ goin' already! Just have to get the sticks to chase away the sea gulls tryin' to steal your grub off the grill!
Damn, I might just burn some vacation anyway and take off a little early. I think I have enough. I have 416 hours of vacation time saved up. Yes, that's 10 weeks and 2 days worth. I wonder what my friend Matt is doing this weekend? Might have to go take a crabbin' trip down. Blues should be big enough to take in by now.

Darn right. I'm always amazed at how far I can go up in the mountains in a matter of no time. I guess I'm used to the traffic here in Florida with all the yankees and foreigners!

Yup, all the bluehairs and vatos who can't drive for shit are down there. Up here ya just gotta watch out for drunks in old pickups. It great going out into the country and having the road to yourself. I never could do that in FL, even out in the boonies.
416 hours of vacation? damn! I think I get 40 hours a year...
Time to go to work for myself.

I find it hard to even get away for a week! I am, however, going back the N.C. in Dec. hopefully.
