stage 2 or 3?

I am going to pull the tranny out of my '70 Camaro this winter and rebuild it. The tranny is the only piece of the car that has never been out. It still works great, given the abuse I put it through (amazingly enough!), but I want to make it track worthy. A little background....I am slowly building the car for street and 1/4 mile track. When I bought the car about 5 years ago, it was totally stock with a 307, th350, column shift, and a 2:73 rearend. Pretty weak! Now it has a 4 bolt '69 Z28 350 with a nice lumpy cam, decent heads, airgap intake, Holley street avenger, gear drive, a 3:08 posi rearend, Hurst floor shifter, linelock (that I'm still working the bugs out of) 8 pt cage, and subframe connectors. I don't do any racing for money, just for fun but I want to know if I should go with a stage 2 or 3 in my tranny. I don't really drive the car. I take it out for an ocasional cruise in the summer and to the track a couple of times. Other than that, I just have it as a project. I have a nasty 396 lined up for it and plan on running nos on it until I can afford a blower. Basically, I want something that is drivable on the street, but want it fast. I don't care if it shifts hard, but is stage 3 too hard? I also plan on 3:42 or 3:55 gears with a mini spool in the rear. I have a limited budget and do things a little at a time. I will be able to do the whole tranny this winter, but will probably have to go cheaper on the torque converter because they can get very expensive. I do know that I don't want a high stall. Let's hear it guys. What are your sugestions?

Thats a mistake, esepecially if your gonna spray it. Spend the money on a good converter one with an anti balloning plate or your gonna trash it. I would skimp a bit on the trans before the converter.

Theres a shop here in Houston Circle D that can build you a very good converter at a pretty good price. I would call them and tell them your plans and have them make a recomendation of what you should use.

Thanx for the suggestion. I will call them. Any other thoughts greatly appreciated.
