Some of you guys may remember that I build custom fishing rods as a hobbie. Here's a few pics of one I built last weekend for a customer. Not a high dollar rod. It went for $125

BTW, those arent scuffs showing up, it's just glare from the flash.

Posted by: DeckSetter

oh how I wish I had photoshop and could change that to "Jay Likes Rods"

seriously though, nice work!

Posted by: skeezix

Very nice work Jay.

Posted by: John

Dude! Build me one!

Posted by: Adrenalin

You gotta build em cuz since Wayne left ya, you sure can't use em!

Posted by: MadScientistMatt

Nice workmanship.

Those rice boys may have thought good ol' boys didn't know much about high tech things, but we were using carbon fiber for fishing rods long before they thought of putting it on their cars.

Thanks for the comments, guys (except for Adrenalin's comment :flip: ).

$125 bucks for a fishing pole ISNT high dollar?

You ever heard of G-Loomis, Sage, Seeker, Cape Fear? It can be tough to find any of these rods for less than $150. Many of them being at least $300. Now combine these with an Avet, Progear, ZeeBaas, Fin Nor, Van Staal, or Accurate reel, and You're looking at a small fortune.

Personally, I've never spent more than $170 on a rod & reel combo, and I'm happy with my purchases.

Posted by: John

Man, you can find even the mid-level stuff from the likes of Shakespere, Winchester and Daiwa running up tallies of close to $500. Most of teh stuff already mentioned STARTS at $150!

Did you check out the ZeeBaas link in my post? Can you believe $1,300 for a spinning reel???

Posted by: StoneFox

My old abu garcia and ugly stick works just fine for me. all together i think i spent like 80 bucks on it total.

Posted by: LS1JAY

Well, this rod wasn't high dollar as far as custom built rods go. It didn't have grade A cork, it had titanium guides, but they weren't Fuji. The blank wasn't a high dollar blank either. I built it according to the customers budget. I have some rods that would be more in the $300 range.

Sure they'll work, but it's a whole new game when you fish with a spined, custom built rod with the best components. I even balance some of the rods I build to the exact reel that it will carry.

BTW, my reel of choice...

Ugly Sticks are awesome and for the price, hard to beat in that price range.

I have some real old Daiwa, Penn and General stuff. It's not high dollar by any standard but it's nice stuff, especially since I got it all when I was 8 years old. Cost a small fortune to an 8 year old too.

I've got a 7' Ugly Stick Tiger w/ a Penn 320GT. I use this combo mostly when trolling for salmon (dragging a 2.5lb lead ball at about 5-6 knots) & jigging for rockfish, but it will be great for Sturgeon when I decide to target them as well. I've had this combo for about 8 years, and it's holding up just great.

Yeah, I can believe that. I've seen fly fishing gear much, much more expensive. Also, there are some saltwater rigs I've seen top out over 3K for "mid-level" gear.

It all depends on what you want to do and how much you want to spend. A $1300 reel seems expensive to us but then again, a guy who sees the value and reasoning behind such a fishing reel thinks that paying $8K to assemble a street/strip engine for a Mustang is silly when a $2500 reman from Pep Boys will do fine in his pickup truck so it should be find for a Mustang too.

It's all about perspective and purpose. Yes, it can get out of hand, anything considered a hobby can. It usually happens you get some smacked ass with too much money who doesn't understand the idea behind "diminishing returns" and endlessly pursues "improvement" into a realm where improvement is a subjective term totally devoid of any rational measurement. It happens in cars, sports, electronics, computers...you name it, anywhere there is a guy with a complex who needs to be better, edgier, more advanced than the next guy, there will be that holy grail of equipment or standard that they need to aspire to and reach at all costs.

The only benefit is that these guys are the ones dumping $1300 reels on the used market for $500 for the only reason that they found something they deemed better and that $1300 reel is no longer worthy of them. That's not to say it isn't worth it. The idea behind fishing is to trick the stupid fish into taking the bait. For that to happen, your gear needs to have properties that will let you simulate the environment and behavior of that bait as best as you can. If that is the case, it follows suit that if your gear is better, it lets you simulate a natural environment better and makes your bait more attractive to fish. If the bait is more attractive to fish then, you'll catch more fish, right? The problem is that with everything, there is skill involved and that can't be bought. It's the same reason you seen kids with Mustangs, Camaros and such running brackets every weekend and soundly losing to an old guy in a Ford Fiesta or Plymouth Reliant.

There is a place for high dollar gear and I'm sure that alot of guys who sell high dollar gear would love to get it more affordable so more people could enjoy that standard but the fact remains that these high-tech materials and high quality workmanship/assembly by man or machine cost money. From design to final sale, there are alot of hands in the mix from materials supplies and manufacturers to bait shop owners standing behind the counter and they all not only want but need thier fair share. They all gotta make a living too. That cost gets passed on to the consumer and that's how a reel that probably costs $500 to make ends up costing $1300 to sell.

$150 for a FISHING ROD?!?!

I'd pay that for a good rod. My father has to have spent $20-30,000 on rods and reals. But, I think only two of them cost over $1,000. They're some sweet rods and his name in each one (in gold leaf, bla, bla, bla).
Yeah, they're some badass rods, IMO. But I couldn't justify spending that kinda cash ($1,800, or whatever) on a rod an real combo.
But, he owns four boats too. And he lives "on the water".
And while I use to enjoy fishing very much, I don't live on the water and I don't own a single boat.
Then again, why should I? I can use his stuff!
Plus, I have my trusty LightningRod and whatever real I have on it now that works just fine for me. I've cought 10lb LMB with an ultra light and my LightningRod has dragged in some serious fisheses. Worst part is I haven't been fishing in a year.

Good deal, Jay. That's a hobby that could make you some good money. Oh, and uh, not bad for a redneck.

A friend I used to fish with has been building them since '71 and he taught me in '98. It does take patience, but it's very rewarding.

Here's one of the places I buy from. I've been up there a couple times, but I usually just order on line since it's a 60+ mile drive. http://shop.mudhole.com/

The most you probably ever caught from that rod and reel, was rust...

Posted by: LS1JAY

Most of my combos are probably in the $400 range for the rod and reel. I'm about to build a 6'6" St Croix MHF black matte finish worm rod for myself. I just bought a Calcutta 100 last week for it and the blank should be here any day (it was a special order). I paid $203 with tax for the reel and the rod and components was in the $160 range. All I have to do now is build the rod.

I'll have to post a pic of a customers rod I will be building soon (it's been ordered). It's a PINK blank! and yes, it's for a lady! I've built one for the guy and one for his son and now I'm working on one for his wife as soon as it gets here.

I can see you definitely go for quality fishing gear. I get mostly low-intermediate stuff, and take good care of it to prevent rust. I've probably got somewhere around 2 dozen rod & reel combos and at least 5 additional reels that don't have a rod to sit on. One being a monster Penn 116 that I want to mount on a cheap roller-guide rod, to use when I go after giant squid again. pulling 40lbs from a depth of 1,500' is a lot of work for a small reel.

If you really want to know, I can find out. She belongs to a fishing forum that I'm on. I've met her...been to a couple of the gatherings for the website, but don't really know her.

ive got a 7' 2 flippen stick i had built about ten years ago.
it has fuji eyes and a top end cork handle.
i have caught about a million fish with it and its still like new.
the rods you buy at wal-mart are about 40% clear coat. lol

Posted by: LS1JAY

Here's a pic of one I'm building right now for my new Calcutta. It's a St Croix 6'6" MHF. This will be my new worm rod.
