Well, I Traded the Jeep Off...

'Bout time, right?

After almost 4 years and 63,500 miles, I traded off the HEEP ('95 Cherokee) today.

Got a sweet deal on a black '01 Dakota Quad Cab (4 door) 4x4 with a 4.7 V8. It's got 93k on it, but I couldn't pass up the $10,500 asking price when they gave me $1150 for my Jeep. It's a Sport, but pretty well optioned. Power heated mirrors, rear window defogger, cd player (aftermarket, which seemed odd), fog lights, AWD but I can lock it into 4 wheel (hi or low), soft tonneau cover (rollup, have to open the tailgate to roll it up) with a lockable tailgate. The only thing I know it doesn't have is power leather seats, but those are pretty rare in a Dakota.

I brought it home tonight, I'll sign the loan paperwork on Monday assuming the approve me. The loan will be for 54 months at 6.5%. I've never had a late payment, the Jeep was originally a $3500 loan almost 4 years ago. I paid it off early and now have a credit card with a $3500 limit and another one with a $3000 limit at 0% interest. I doubt they'd deny me on the loan, but we shall see. The payment should be about half my weekly bring home.

I'll try to get some pics up tomorrow, I need to give it a bath first.

Think I made a good deal?

Good for you! Hope you enjoy it.

BTW, my monthly 4R payment is $659! That was however on a $39,000 loan.

Wow, somebody else saying goodbye to their XJ. What a sad time.

I love those Dakotas, though! By far the best body style for them. Congrats!!

You bought new though too, right? Daaaang that's a high payment. Mine should come out to $212 a month, principle under $10,000 for 54 months, so I'm happy with it.

How do you like the 4R Jay?

we just got a 2000 ford explorer xlt all wheel drive .. 60,000 miles for around 7,000 traded the v6 rustang and only owe 220 a month for 12 months.

leather, power seats, all wheel drive, 5.0 v8, running boards, loaded...
it looks brand new and the kelly blue book retail was around 14,000 trade in value was 10,000

the v8 xlt was the best explorer they made it should go an easy 200,000 miles

i like the dakotas too they are very dependable . of course jays toyota should last for about a million miles , those freaken toyotas never die.

Yeah, I bought it new. Sticker was $35,000 and with the Trailblazer trade in it was almost $39,000 out the door. I like it a LOT! It's 10 X's the vehicle the Trailgazer was. It's loaded too, with leather, moon roof, every option you could get just about.

when i got my Wrangler Rubicon, that same thing happened to me...traded in a car that i owed more on then they gave me, but, i also traded in a jeep that was all paid for so that brought it down some...but i ended up financing a jeep that originally costed 29,500, for 31,500 with 72 month loan period at 520 bucks a month...i traded a Lexus GS400 and havent regreted it since

PICS:

It's got some Firestone Indy 265 70R 16 (about 31" I think) on it for rubber right now, I think they look a little small. Might have to step it up to a 75 series next year. These tires are great on the road, smooth and quiet, but I do commercial construction so I'll probably be in and out of the mud a lot and I love to play in the snow so I might try to move up to something with a little more meat for tread when these wear out. I'm trying to find some pictures of stock ride height with a little larger tire to see what it'll look like. A 3" body lift with 285 75's on it just looks TOO tall for one of these in my opinion.

Only issue so far is...... I'VE SPILLED 4 DRINKS IN THIS THING IN THE FIRST 48 HOURS OR OWNERSHIP. The cupholder is in the center console down on the floor and too far forward. The gear shift sticks 4-5" to the right of the steering wheel, and I seem to always thwack it on the way up and drop my cup! I now carry a roll of rags and container of Armor All wipes with me everywhere I go.

Very nice looking! Now, go romp on that gas pedal and burn some rubber! Not like you'll get any worse gas mileage!

Dad had an extended cab Dakota (was a 98 or 99, if I remember correctly...was that same body style). It would scoot, but he always got the same fuel mileage no matter how he drove it, highway, or city. Seems like the number he said was 13. 12 or 13.

Won't burn rubber so well, the AWD will most likely make for a wicked launch though Haven't tried it yet, I've got 2 buckets full of tools in the bed at the moment.

I think I'd have to hammer it ALL the time to get 13mpg. The trip computer says I'm averaging over 18.5 this tank of gas, but I've been pretty easy on it most of the time and I drive mostly highway.

I LOVE this 4.7 V8. Doesn't have a TON of bottom end, but I wouldn't say it's lacking. Very, VERY smooth. You barely feel a quiver when you start the engine. My Jeep would shake like crazy when you turned the key to start it. They say the 4.7 is only 235hp I think, but it feels about as quick as the Jeep which weighed close to 1500lbs less and had 190hp. It moves the 4500lbs around nicely.

Already thinking about how to get a little more power out of it too... this thing is begging for dual exhaust at least........

I just asked Dad about our Dakota for some more clarification. We leased a 98/99 Dakota, like I said, but I got everything esle wrong.

It had the 5.2 V8 in it and had a 4:1 rear end. He never saw more than 13mpg, he said.

But it would move!

Posted by: bl3wbyu

You sure it has a 4.7? I'm reading online, and it says that from '97 - '04 they only came with three engines: 2.5L, 3.9L, and 5.2L. The 5.2L puts out 230hp.

Whoops. A little further reading and then this:
Quote:
2000 Dodge Dakota: Dakotas could now be equipped with a 235-horsepower, 4.7-liter V8 engine, borrowed from the Jeep Grand Cherokee. It replaced the previous 5.2-liter V8.

Posted by: bl3wbyu

More reading:

5.2L:
230hp and 300lb-ft and ConsumerGuide observed 13.3mpg

4.7L:
230-235hp and 295lb-ft and ConsumerGuide observed 16...with the 5speed auto.

Posted by: StoneFox

The Dakota also came with a 5.9 in R/T trim

Posted by: bl3wbyu

Yeah, I read that. But disappointingly enough, it didn't seem to have that much more hp or torque. Forgot the numbers already, though.

In 2000 the 4.7 replaced the 5.2 in Dakotas / Durangos. It actually came first in '99 in the Grand Cherokee. Also, Stone Fox is right. The Dakota R/T came with a 5.9. They say a 4.7 5 speed truck will usually beat a 5.9 R/T (if the 4.7 driver can shift).

Your dad probably had 3.92 gears. I'm not sure what mine has yet, but it is at 2000rpm at just a tick below 70mph. Might be 3.55s, I have to find out.

Posted by: DeckSetter

Also, forgot to mention, the 5.9 was also optional in the Dakota QUAD CAB ONLY. If you had a 5.9 in a Dakota, it had to be a quad cab or an R/T. You could also get it in the Durango.
