It will be ok, Im thinking of a mild 331. I want it to be a clean street truck not so much for the race track

Do you miss it?

Posted by: StoneFox

The only Mustang that Ive ever had that I miss is my first one. I had a 95 GT that got totaled. Sence then Ive had 4 more. They come and go.

Hard to find ANY clean foxes around Chicago... i stilll wish i would have picked up that 86 GT a few months ago

331 power in a Ranger... You'd better talk to 11secondranger about traction. Have fun if you get one, they are cool toys.

lol who needs traction on the highway, some 17s and drag radials will suite me ok I guess

Did they ever put an 8.8 in Rangers or are they all 7.5s. And will an Exploder 8.8 fit in a Ranger?

Also Im not to sure about what trans to run, AOD, 4R70W? or maybe an adapter and a 700R4 or 200R4

Yes the 4.0L 4x4 Rangers had 8.8's in them, Atleast from 93 on. I'm not sure, but I think the 4.0L 2 wheel drives had them as well. The only problem with the Ranger rearends I know of is if you go to bigger axles (i.e. 31 or 33 spline) as the pumkin is offset to the drivers side, and the left axle is shorter than the right. It'll require 2 different part #'s. As for the tranny, if you're going to adapt a GM tranny, go with a built powerglide (terrible for highway if you have gears lower than 3.00:1). The easiest fit will be a C-4, but in the newer ones (93-present) an AOD shouldn't be to bad (I'm not sure what they run for autos behind the 4.0's as far as external dimensions). I've seen a couple with T-5's in them, but some fab work had to be done to facilitate the hydraulic clutch on the truck (bellhousing/clutch were from Mustangs with the ol' cable clutch). I assisted in a 302 swap in a 1st gen 2wd once. It was a PITA, even with the Kaufmann swap kit. Of course I originally was going to do it for myself but sold the truck and kit, and helped put it together. I HAD to have a manual tranny, and was going to use a 4spd toploader I had. They guy found some SFI Scattershield/Bellhousing setup that used a hydro clutch setup. Had to do alot of clearancing on the firewall and front of the tranny tunnel with a big hammer. Once it was together it was a trip to ride in with the stock 14" pizza cutters on it. Dry pavement was like ice.

You should be able to pull a 9-inch from a Granada or one of it's Linc/Merc siblings and it'll fit the Ranger well. It's about 2-3 inches narrower but that's ok because it helps with the offset for the much larger rear wheels you will need. On top of that, it will likely have disc brakes and the same bolt pattern for the wheel studs. I know people who have moved suspension parts inboard and were able to fit 15 inch wide wheels under the stock rear wheel wells. If you are going for a drag car, a 4 link with in-board coil-overs will give you a ton of space and should still tuck the wheels under the fenders provided you roll the fender lips.

the Powerglide and C4 wont be a good option for me, I want this to be primaraly a street car so overdrive is a must. Ill probably go with an AOD. James Duff used to make an adapter to run a hydro clutch on the T5 but its no longer available.

I was thinking the 4x4s had 8.8s, thanks for the conformation. That seems like the cheepest and easiest thing to do, Although a 9 inch would be cool also.

Stone, I know a dude that is swapping out his 5-speed 302 setup out of his Ranger for a BBF.

If you wanna hit him up for parts: www.bigblockranger.com is his site. He's up here in Amarillo.
