Yes the 4.0L 4x4 Rangers had 8.8's in them, Atleast from 93 on. I'm not sure, but I think the 4.0L 2 wheel drives had them as well. The only problem with the Ranger rearends I know of is if you go to bigger axles (i.e. 31 or 33 spline) as the pumkin is offset to the drivers side, and the left axle is shorter than the right. It'll require 2 different part #'s. As for the tranny, if you're going to adapt a GM tranny, go with a built powerglide (terrible for highway if you have gears lower than 3.00:1). The easiest fit will be a C-4, but in the newer ones (93-present) an AOD shouldn't be to bad (I'm not sure what they run for autos behind the 4.0's as far as external dimensions). I've seen a couple with T-5's in them, but some fab work had to be done to facilitate the hydraulic clutch on the truck (bellhousing/clutch were from Mustangs with the ol' cable clutch). I assisted in a 302 swap in a 1st gen 2wd once. It was a PITA, even with the Kaufmann swap kit. Of course I originally was going to do it for myself but sold the truck and kit, and helped put it together. I HAD to have a manual tranny, and was going to use a 4spd toploader I had. They guy found some SFI Scattershield/Bellhousing setup that used a hydro clutch setup. Had to do alot of clearancing on the firewall and front of the tranny tunnel with a big hammer. Once it was together it was a trip to ride in with the stock 14" pizza cutters on it. Dry pavement was like ice.
