Paint - a funny & a Question

Being the all knowing technical genious that I am (read sarcasm), I decide to tackle some painting on the stang. I have painted the engine bay, front bumper cover (base coat/clear coat), and for my first time I dont think it turned out too bad, not perfect by any means....

I decide to now paint my hood! Not a problem for a vet like me right? Well, I get the neighbor to give me a hand, rinsing out the measuring cup and all, I grab the paint and hardener and mix it up pour it in the gun and go at it! After a few minutes..... okay after I was completely done and wondering why it just didnt seem right... I give it a few and gather up the stuff to clear it. Found the clear coat now wheres that hardener... oh there it is....wait thats reducer.....

SOB!!!!!

Back to square one...

So here's the question:

It currently has a slight matt type look to it, so can I give it a good 1000 grit sanding to smooth it up or do I need to take it down to the primer/gel coat before re-spraying it?

hehe, np bro, I figure unless peeps say otherwise, Ima 1000 grit it tomorrow and start again. When that is done, then I'll try to get the rear bumper cover done this weekend!

Btw, you should come by and check out the new motor!

That's actually not a bad idea!! I dont have one and too bad, I can't take the hood to get it sandblasted on my Z....

I saw a deck lid that was sandblasted by somewhat less than an automotive specialist. It had pin size dents all over it. I suppose you could use some kind of nut shells or plastic abrasive at a low-ish pressure. There is a book about automotive paint basics, it is like $15 worth having around just for an occasional toilet reading if nothing else. Its published by that company that does all kinds of rebuilding hobby type of books. HP books or something...

Some laquer thinner did the trick, it wiped right off with no prob and I've already wet sanded 9/10ths of it. I'll primer it, and attempt to paint it again tomorrow, lets just hope I dont have any more brain farts!
