Everytime I try to play video's I recieve in E-Mails from my buddy, I get this message.

One of three things is going on.

1.) Windows Media Player might not support the format the movie is in. This is possible because WMP will associate itself with all media files, even ones it can't play. It's stupid like that.

2.) You don't have the proper Codec to play the movie. Codecs are like secret decoder rings for media players. All the different media formats have encryption embedded and/or have a compression alogrithm that needs to be decoded. Without that needed codec, you don't get to see the secret message. Gotta find out what codec you need and go get it. A better option is to find a codec pack that has a bunch of the more common codecs, download and install it. It usually fixes those problems. Some codecs need thier own player. Like ogg-vorbis. That usually comes with it's own player because last I remember, Winamp is the only player that has codecs available to support ogg-vorbis. Otherwise, you need a 3rd party codec which install universal libraries to work with most media players.

3.) Your friend is dumb and can't use email properly or he has a virus and keeps sending you files that are infected. Either your computer or your ISP is filtering out the naughty bits and it is making it unplayable or he just doesn't realize he's making a mistake in his file transfers and is sending you incomplete, therefore corrupted files.

Here is a codec pack for playing DiVX movies. That's usually the problem that most people run in to. Go to this page and download the package.

Once it's downloaded, it should be a self-extracting archive. Double click, follow the on-screen instructions to unpack and install the files. Let it install everything but don't change any file associations if you can help it. Then go and try and watch those videos again. If they still don't work, your buddy has a problem with his files.

Actually, here's a better package for you if you are using Windows XP.

It's more complete and covers several different audio files too.

Oh and one more thing. Some of these codecs will return false positives for Trojans. If you get them from the sites I listed, there won't be any viruses in them.

I would not intentionally do such a thing. I have installed both of those codec packs myself with no ill effects whatsoever.

Go ahead and think I'm "over-reacting" but this is my "trade" so to speak. I make my living at it and I'm good enough that I still have a job. I'm proud of what I do and that I can do it so well. I worked hard to get here and I don't like people making jokes about it. I wouldn't do it to you, don't do it to me.

That is a Windows Media Audio extension. If he's encoding video as .WMA, that doesn't always work. He's probably sending you junk files. If he is making them and he can use them, see if he can convert them to .AVI files. They will end up being a bit bigger in file size but they are more likely to work.
