I was out of town on Friday, and found out today that my 8 3/4" axle arrived then. I went with something pretty serious - this one has Moser big bolt pattern axles, E-body drums, and a Sure Grip in a 489 case with 3.23:1 gears. This will definitely give me some peace of mind about what I'm putting under the hood, as I was kind of worried my 7 1/4" axle wouldn't be able to take what the motor was going to dish out.

That's good stuff, bud!
I think it'll prove to be somewhat stronger.

Good call on that rear. The old one probably would've been mush in short order with anything serious ahead of it.

8 3/4 Come on Matt............ Put a REAR END in there.
DANA baby, that's the way to go.
Like I was told along time ago. Do the job ONCE, you don't need the experience.

I've already done one inadequate swap when I mistook a 7 1/4" for an 8 1/4" - got some bad information on the wrong website that all large bolt pattern A-body axles were 8 1/4" and the 7 1/4" were all small bolt pattern.
But face it: If I can crack a beefed up 8 3/4" with a slant six, that's going to be something I am going to be proud of.
