What size differential do you have? There were two options that year, plus another one that could have been swapped in from other Darts, and you never know what somebody might have put in there to keep it on the road (there are several Ford axles reported to be bolt ins). Do you know if it's a 7 1/4", a 8 1/4", or a 8 3/4"? If you don't know what size it is, post how many bolts are on the rear cover - or if there's no cover on the back and a removable center section.
If it's a 7 1/4", these are still pretty cheap and not too hard to find, especially in California. If you have an 8 3/4", chances are a rebuild might make financial sense. I recently paid over $1,000 for an 8 3/4" rear axle - granted, it had a limited slip, oversized drums, and Moser race axles. You can, however, find used 8 3/4" center sections from $125 to $400 depending on their desirability.
Also, what's under the hood? That would also influence my choice - repair a 7 1/4" behind a big block, and you'll have to do it all over again very soon!
