Ok... I just got an interesting problem fixed on my Mustang. I would never have guessed this to be the issue. So, let's have some fun! I will tell you what it was doing... you can ask me questions about it if you want... and we will see if anyone can guess it.

.
.
.
.

So the wife and I had a "Date Night" two weekends ago. Dropped my son off with my Dad for the night and we took my demo home and got the Mustang out. Dropped the top on it and went out to eat. When we got back home we got to talking about watching a DVD and having some drinks. So we jump back in the car and head to the store to get some stuff to mix drinks with. On the way to the store I start noticing a sound. At the time (with the top down on the car) it sounded like the noise came from the rear of the car. It was like a squeak... almost like a chirp. When I would let out of the gas and let the car coast the noise would happen when I pushed the gas pedal again.

It wouldn't do it any other time. Just when I got back into the gas.

I drove it to work the next day and went to get the service manager. He and I took the car out, with the top up and him driving. Now it sounded as if the noise was coming from the front of the car... almost like it was behind the center radio cluster... and now you could hear it when you pushed the pedal and when you let off of the pedal.

......

Anyone want to see if they have it figured out? There was also another issue that was fixed when this problem was taken car of... but I didn't know it was related and I thought the secondary thing was something totally different... turns out they were both caused by this same problem.

......

So the solution is to replace the engine with a boat anchor and make sure the car never runs again. I think that's a bit drastic considering he's most likely dealing with a mouse or bird that was on the roof when he put the top down.

So was a bird nesting in your car or not?

No. This was a true mechanical problem with the car.

ok I'm stumped.

What kind of mechanical problem can move from the rear of the car to the dash?

Usually, the only time an odd noise is noticed upon accleration, and sometimes deceleration would be driveline related... U-joints, for example. But it could be anything not properly tightened as well. So did it require a new part, or what?

I said a LS1.... not a 302!

Just knowing Chevy made an LS1 based 302 makes me laugh about this one...

You are pretty close. It was driveline related and no it did not require a new part.

As it was explained to me:

"There were a couple of bolts loose on the driveshaft which allowed it to move back and forth under accleration and deceleration. That movement is what caused the noise, which was slowly getting louder."

The noise didn't actually move. Because the top was down the road noise kept me from being able to pin point the exact place... I said it sounded like it was coming from the rear. Once the top was up and the road noise gone, for the most part, we could tell that it was coming more from the front of the car...

U-joints are about as close as one can get to those bolts...And since I also mentioned loosened items... I'll take the win!

Of course, that was probably why the tech found the real problem... Went and checked the u-joints. That's what I'd have done, and no doubt, when I'd have found the loose bolts... Ya just don't go thinking it's the bolts. At least, not me.

I was thinking the nut behind the steering wheel was loose...

Yeah, at first when we thought it was coming from the rear, the service guy thought that maybe there was to much backlash from when the rear was replaced at my old dealership. (TSB for clutch packs or something) He thought that maybe when they replaced it that they had to much backlash which could cause noises all the way to the front (according to him... I don't have a clue).

But then we we found that it was coming more from the front... so he started checking the drive line and probably was checking the u joints like you said.

He's the other problem that turned out to be related. When you would change gears at cruising speeds you would hear a clunking sound. Mainly from 1st to 2nd or Reverse to 1st. I was just chalky it up to the crappy factory shifter. Turns out the noise was from the same driveshaft problem. Now that noise is gone too.

Ahhh... When these two are found together, I'd immediately check the driveshaft and rear. This problem is more likely associated with too much lash, but those loose bolts would be able to cause a very similar symptom. So the bolts would be the next thing to look at if the shaft spins too much before wheel movement or the wheels move too much before the shaft gets turning.

The resident Ranger guy knows all about this stuff. He'd probably look in the same manner. What I've done in the past is begin by trying to move the car back and forth by a wheel while parked with the engine off. If it moves much, time to lift it and twist the D/S to further note excessive lash, but this time, in neutral with wheels chocked. In so doing, the problem should be found. I figure that's kinda how they noticed your cars issue.

Simple fix, for free. Smoothed out the straightline ride too, didn't it!

Yep sure did. It's funny I never really thought anything about the shifter. It was something that got on my nerves, but I have been wanting to swap the shifter anyway so I ignored the noise. Then I noticed once the car was fixed that the shifter noise was gone too. I never even mentioned to the service guys that the shifter noise was bothering me. The tech just said he figured the noise we were hearing was a driveline noise so he just started checking everything just to make sure. And noticed the bolts.
