How Many Miles are Too Many?

....because I'm looking at a 2000 GMC 1/2 ton 4x4 4.8 with 240k on it.....

Personally I would probably avoid something with that kind of mileage. It feels like too much of a crap shoot to me. Your truck has its share of problems, but you know about most of them. I would be reluctant to inherit a new set of problems that I have little experience with. If I was paying cash I would consider it, but I would be pretty pissed off if I found myself making a monthly payment on a broke down piece of shit.

That's some serious miles! I think I'd keep looking... unless it was a diesel, which it's not in your case.

is it free??? or almost free??

Well I bought it.

2000 GMC Sierra 4.8 V8 4x4, 240,000 miles, power windows/locks/mirrors, cruise, tilt, cd player, keyless entry, etc. Regular cab long bed with a shell.

$2750 is what I paid.

The truck is straight, tight, hardly any rust. It's not rust free like the Dakota (which was a southern truck), but rust isn't serious yet, and I think I can fix it myself pretty easily.

Basically I needed a work truck because the Dak had too many problems, and I got one that's got some miles on it but has less issues than the Dak, is 3 years newer, is bigger, gets better gas mileage, and has brand new tires on it (like, under 1000 miles new!).

AND, I should be able to sell the Dakota for around what I've got in this truck.

I think I did good.

That was a lot cheaper than what I was expecting it to go for. Good luck man.

I'd be more worried about it being a Chevrolet than I would the mileage.

That fact alone is why it's still running strong!

There is still a little kick here. You just have to prod it a bit

Yep...

Looks pretty clean. There are a few 5.3, 4.8 trucks on base with 300,000 govt miles on them. Which mean a 1 million normal people miles.

300,000?! daaaaang

I'm up to 242k now, truck runs and drives pretty good! Everything about the truck seems tight suspension / brake wise.

Fuel economy has been a lot better than the Dakota. I got around 16mpg for 2 tanks (one of them had the trip home on it, which was 75-80mph). The 3rd tank I got 18.4mpg being really nice to it. I may lower it a little and make a grille block to help my fuel economy some more.

The rear main seal does leak a little, but it leaks less oil than my Dakota burns.

I may have an oil pump issue. The day I drove it home, after 2 solid hours of driving 75-80mph, I hammered it a couple times to see what it would do. After that, the oil pressure started to fluctuate. Next thing I know I hear it start ticking, look down, oil pressure is at 0. Pulled off, checked oil, level was good, started it back up, it was normal. A few miles down the road it did it again. Pulled off, let it sit a minute, started it up, it was fine. When it acted up, it would go down slowly from about 35psi, a minute later it would be 33ish, a minute later 30ish, all the way down to under 20 before it would drop off to 0 and start to tick.

It did it one more time on the way home, and hasn't done it since in 2000 miles.

My friend thought maybe the last time the guy changed the oil he didn't change the filter, and maybe the filter was ballooning. Then he looked around online and found something about oil pump issues in these trucks. I haven't been able to fine anything about oil pump issues.

Is the oil pump going out?

Will a new filter solve my problems?

Do I need to swap in a 6.0l?

Oil pump, swap it out. It is ran off the Cam. You drop the pan and pull the timing chaing cover to get it off.

Nice find on the pickup! my '87 Cav had 230k on it when I donated it to a charity in December. Tried selling it, but no luck. Dealer offered only $100 on a trade-in when I got a GMC Canyon in 2010

browsing thru the first generation forum at jbody.org kinda makes me wish i still had it, but parts are a pain in the ass to find and I just don't have the time to tinker with it, hunt down parts, or a place to store it

but i do get a kick out of the regular members' use of the word "cavy'- don't they know it's another term for a guinea pig?!

this thread had me laughing! dude shitcanned his stock intake and then found he couldn't pass smog with his Kragen system!

How much for a new engine? With the way the body looks, drop in a new engine and tranny and that beast could last you forever.....Very Nice!!

Wow, looks like you made quite the good find there! Hopefully your oil pressure issue will be resolved fairly easily and it will serve you well for many miles to come! It LOOKS like it's in great shape!

The truck's doing great, I'm up to 244k miles on it now.

Haven't had any more oil pressure drops but I don't drive it hard either.

I think I'm going to try to get a 5.3 or 6.0 and drop in before too long. I figure, it's got A QUARTER MILLION MILES on it already, and if I want to tow 10,000lbs I'm probably not going to want to do it with the 4.8. If I go 5.3 I may cam it too, but I don't want to lose much mpg since the miles are 95% work and 5% towing.

I've already pulled over 18mpg in 2 tanks with it... not bad for a V8 4x4 eh?
