Starter Question

I am thinking about an engine swap in my cougar, but first i need to get the astro going so I have something to drive while this is going on. It needs a starter. I was going to try to pick one up at a boneyard b/c it is not a cheap item new. So what I am wondering is: Is a starter from a 4.3 S-10 is the same as it is for a 4.3 astro?

I work at a parts house, Ill check for you tomarow.

yep.

You could also use a starter from a v-8 as well. Just make sure of the starter bolt pattern(Diagonal or straight across)

For several years, the 4.3 had 2 different starters used from the factory. You'll simply need the VIN(actually just engine) code to get the correct one from a parts store. From "Dodge land" it's anybodies guess which will work. The VIN code should be either "W" or "Z," btw.

What year is your Astro? I'll tell you "about" what it costs tonight..

Oh and, Hi there Steve!!!

The Astro is an 89 cargo model. The guy at autozone told me 35 for a rebuilt one, but I am not sure he had the right one for this particular van.

In your case, you need an A/C Delco 323-367, but any brand should do. They only used one 4.3L in the 89 Astro and that was the "Z" code engine (non Vortec). Average price ...between $30 and $40, plus a $15 core charge.

I'd just buy a reman or new one. "New" from AZ shouldn't be too bad... And that would be a DL3510-MS, which is a standard drive version, and comes with the solenoid attached, or should!

Standard parts places will probably list this as a 3510M for the rebuild, and it's about $25, plus core.

The "W" code (CPI) wasn't used until 1992, so you're all good with the 4.3 "Z"(TBI) listing. Just make sure of what you're getting if you snag one from a J/Y, which you shouldn't do anyway...

Napa list it as a 46-5022 and it's about $75, or as a 246-5022, which goes in the normal price range of about $35.

Have at it!

Someone told me the it took a commerical one, but I looked at it and they were full of shit. Maybe I'll pull it out friday morning, I will probably just buy the remanufactured one, it isn't that much more, and though the starter isn't hard to get to in that van I only want to do it once.

Remaned. in this case, is the right choice. And for $5 more, get the lifetime warranteed version.
I'll bet you're glad you dont need to swap spark plugs!! That's a beeeeaaatch.

Posted by: 65fairlane

I think it took us 2 days to swap the plugs. If they need changed again I am going to buy a tpi 350 and drop it right in there instead. I think it will be just as easy.

now how did it take 2 days to change 6 plugs in a astro I have 2 of those and never noticed it being overly difficult

I broke the ceramic part off of one of them and tried to get it out for an hour os so and then went in the house and took a shower. The next day I went out and finished it.

ok now I see sounds like rust

Everything we have is rusty. I like to multiply the time it should take by two or two and a half. This takes into account dealing with siezed parts and me getting mad and walking away from it before I screw it up worse.

every once in a while we get to see a rusty car I can hardly believe how rusty they are
