PING

Does anyone experiance ping at high RPMs and hard acelleration?
I use the recommended 87 octane in the GT, and I notice ping when under hard accleration. I think this may be normal, but for the winter I was thinking of switching to 89 octane.

It has been my experience that you would want as much octane during the hotter months to reduce ping and then during the colder months you may be able to lower the octane without pinging. Try this out for yourself. Good luck.

My girlfriend's grand am started running like crap (hesitating and stuff) then she switched to 89 and it stopped.

Heat = detonation. Octane requirements go down in cold weather. I'll list some other stuff.
too much timing, too lean, to much cylinder pressure (result of high stacic compression and other factors like cam timing) also @ higher altitudes octane requirement goes down due to less air pressure.

My 4.6 stang has always pinged and ran like ass with 87 octane
I find that it runs its best with 89.

I have noticed that U.S. gas is pretty low quality.

Jump up to the 91 octane you'll notice a difference

only run what the car needs. fastest burn is the best burn.

I sometimes use 89 but wonder if it really matters? The mill is built for the 87 and I think that some of the suggestions for 89 may take some research. If I am not mistaken, the LS1 has a ping sensor that adjusts timing when ping is detected?

Yep the LS1 has two knock sensors under the intake. I think they shoulda plugged em into the block IMO cuz they pick up valve train harmonics as well, so much for a solid cam.

True, but most performance engines will recomend atleast 91 octane. LS1 need atleast 91 (I run 93) to avoid detonation at WOT and so should a Mustang IMO. BTW Steve, I have 0 KR with my LS1 so I guess my sensors aren't picking up too much valve train noise. go do something constructive now and play with the timing on your pick up truck!:flip: :btg: :waisted:
