Can you make an 86 Iroc go fast with the Stock engine?I need a decent work car fast and ran into a decent 86 Iroc...I used to have an 86 Camaro wich was carburated and not responsive to mods...This Iroc has a TPI set-up with an automatic tranny..I would like a work car wich I could also drag race every now and then....Is this engine hopeless?

Essentially yes. The bore is too small, the heads flow very poorly and the cam in the 305/auto cars is REALLY small. The only way to make it decently fast (say 13's), is either a motor swap or alot of $$$ invested.
If you want to go fast cheap, a 305 camaro with a auto isn't the car for you.
Either find a car w/ the 350 motor or at the very least a tuned port 305/w the 5 speed. The 5 speed 305s have the same cam as the 350, which is much better. The cam alone was worth 25hp in 87.
There are a TON of parts available for these cars. However, overcoming the shortcomings of an L98 can be expensive, as all the aftermarket intakes cost buku $$$.

I was able to run 13.40@101+ with my L-98 Formula with bolt on's.
It still had the stock 3:27 gears and the stock converter, so it was pretty strong.
The L-98's are nice motors though and can be made respectable with bolt on's, you just need the right ones, but my advise would be to stay clear of the 305's!

Thanks for advice guys....but I already found a 94 T-bird wich should do nicely...got it cheap,is a v-8,and only 54,000 miles...runs pretty strong for a 4,000 pound car...any advice on mods for this one....It's a 4.6 mod...

well now that reading these post i really am not looking forward to a early 90' 305 z28 camaro from wat u guys are telling me...there basically junk. I looked at some Z28s with 350s and couldnt find any without 150,000 miles on them..i no these year camaros were known for problems but i just really like them. I am saving my money for a 91-92 camaro decent condition with a 350. I may just find one with a 305 and buy a 350 for it though i dont no really i dont got much money. Im only 16 so well see wat happens i may just end up buying a 93' Z28 they got 350s and are more reliable.

I dont think the 4th gen cars are any more reliable. The parts are more expensive and they are a bit more difficult to work on. They are faster stock, but don't handle as well as the 3rd gens.
Also, keep in mind any car thats 10-12 years old is going to need work. The chances of finding a low mileage f-body from those years is pretty slim.
90-92 z28s and 93-94's cost about the same. Around here about 5k, maybe a little less for the earlier ones.
I personally like the looks of the 3rd gen camaros much more than the 4th gens. With firebirds its the other way around.
It all comes down to what you can find in your price range and what your goal is.

i love the looks of the 3rd gen but im just concerned how much money i would have to put into them to make them "semi-fast" 13's and high 12's
thx for the info btw

Well, the only 3rd gen capable of those times stock were the 89 Turbo T/A's or the first Firehawks. And those are like 20 grand or more now. Way more for the Firehawks.
I'd say wait and get an L98. There's a big aftermarket for them, seeing as how most of the firebirds and ALL the camaro's sucked from the factory in a straight line.
