Ok, yesterday as soon as i got off the expressway, when i came to a stop, the brakes made this really HORRIBLE rumbling sound. I thought it was my mufflers for a second, but then every time i braked, this sound was coming out.

I bought the car in 99 and it had new brakes put on it from Carmax...i havent changed them since. Could that be my problem? or is it something i havent checked???? I added brake fluid, but that didnt do anything.

This sound is killing me! I have no idea whats causing it

Thanks for the help-
Mike

You down to the squealers yet? Look thru the front wheel or take it right off see how badly grooved yr rotors are throw em away cuz there ain't enuff meat left to turn em and get new pads and rotors!

Posted by: JustaV6

what does a bad grooved rotor look like? i just went out there and checked em and they didnt seem all that bad.

should i just be safe and go get a new brake job? or is there anything else i could do?

Posted by: DODGE_MAIN

well you will see grooves in the disc. could have a warped rotor also. Take a wheel right off and have a look, how much pad is there? Is it constant noise... Could be a seized caliper.

Posted by: JustaV6

ok, me and my dad checked it out, and the pad is pretty worn out.

the sound only happens when i start braking...when its coming down below about 15 mph its REALLLY grinding

we came to the conclusion that it should prolly get taken in and get new brakes...seeing as these have been on here for almost 45,000 miles.

thanks for the help STEVE... any more ideas are welcome too

Posted by: DODGE_MAIN

yr down to the squealers. they are there to tell ya it's time for new pads.

Posted by: DeckSetter

Yup, you're def. out of pad. When it grinds, you know it's time.

Get some good pads, not any of that cheap autoparts shit. They cost more, but its definatly worth it.

I have Performance Friction carbon metallic Z rated pads. I can't say enough great things about these. They are WAY better than the discount auto semi metallics. Some parts stored carry em but they are $$$.

Order them from http://www.nationalfleetparts.com/ They have great prices and thier customer service kicks ass.

I noticed they had one of the pads listed as the wrong part# for 88-92 camaros. I e-mailed them on a friday night with documentation on the differences between the pads. I got an e-mail back about a half hour later. Thats service.

Posted by: JustaV6

eh...i dunno if i could handle 50 buck per pad though...i'm trying to talk my dad into helping me out with it, but no luck yet.

we are probably going to take them to meineke, cuz my pops knows the owner and he could hook us up hopefully. I am still hoping that its just bad pads...cuz if the rotors are fucked, my cars gonna be in the driveway for a LOOOONG time.

Not to be a prick, but why not do it yourself? Sure, you've gotta take the rotors somewhere to get turned, but that should cost $15/rotor at most. Brakes are really easy, and for what it would cost you to have someone else do it once, you can pay for parts *and* all the tools you'd need to do the job.

I would love to do it myself and save the money, but i'm away at school during the week, i usually come home on saturday morning to be with the girlfriend then go back to school sunday night.

So i really dont have any time whatsoever to do any work on my car now I'd just as soon have it dropped off at a shop and get it taken care of.

If it wasnt so bad, i'd wait till winter break and learn how to do it, but its not even driveable right now with the horrible sound it puts out-

-that reminds me, anyone know a good place for brakes other incase my plan doesnt work? Eventually, i could upgrade them to ones like you talked about MIKET, but for now its whatever i can afford

Posted by: MikeT

I hear ya Mike. Though brakes are one place you definatly don't want to skimp on.

Posted by: JustaV6

yea, i definately know that for sure Mike.

Well, my buddy took my car over today for me and just called me a few minutes ago. Not only are the brake pads worn, my struts are old. Apparently you need to replace them after (#) amount of miles too.

So this shit just keeps adding up now. They said the rotors are ok, but could have taken some damage from the worn pads. So, he's taking my car home for me and i gotta talk to my dad and see if he can help me out (seeing as i have NOOOO JOB)

Well, thanks for the help guys...i wouldnt suppose any of you have a couple hundred bucks layin around anywhere Cuz i'm screwed! :P

You do not want to use 100% carbon metallic pads with Ford's stock rubber brake hose. They've been known to burst due to excessive heat buildup. Many a Mustang owner has crashed their car at open track events for this reason.

The EBC Greenstuff and Redstuff pads are some of the best pads around and aren't carbon metallic. Porterfield also makes great pads that aren't carbonmetallic.

While cheap brake pads do fit calipers and stop the car, good brake pads stop a car quicker which can be of great benefit sometimes.

I agree with SVOno50..(can't believe i'm writing this).Although I think the Redstuff pads work best at higher temperature (harder driving)and are more widely used for road racing....

Well I can tell ya from experience that the brakes on the Fox Mustangs are all but usless without good pads at the 85 mph mine`s doing in the 1/8.I wouldn`t have even tried the1/4 without replacing them with better ones. The newer Mustangs don`t look to be a whole lot better.Spring for a decent set of pads.

Posted by: JustaV6

well, this car aint getting any more runs at the track...so i dont think i need the high performance ones too bad now. This car had its time to shine when it ran 14s...now its just gonna be another daily driver v6

unfortunately, i talked to my dad today after we got estimates...he said he'd help me out on the brake pads but the struts are gonna have to be replaced on my own money.

Is it bad to drive on worn down struts?

Posted by: cswrench

It just makes for a rough ride. stuts and shocks do wearout over time and do affect the handling of the car. shocks and struts absorb alot of the jaring the suspension and car recieves from the roads. You can live without them and do little or no damage to the car except rattle it loose over time

Posted by: JustaV6

haha ok cool...i think ill be ok then. this car is a rough ride nomatter what i do

BTW-

I did get a brakejob done for me...my dad told me last night he paid for it but everything else has to be done myself. They were done at meineke and from what he told me are supposed to be the best ones they had in stock. He said they were Raybestos brand and were made for sports cars or something. He had no good details, ill find out this weekend when i see my car

Oh, and he even put a new belt on for me Now i gotta save up for some new struts :-\ Oh well, but i got brakes.

Thanks for all the help guys very much appreciated

Posted by: MikeT

KYB makes some good inexpensive struts. They are much better than stock. Plus installing struts is pretty easy.
