I'm considering changing them on my T-Bird.It's a 4.6.For some reason this cars(94-96)are common to have the valve guides go bad.Mine aren't to bad yet.Donn't know if it's worth the hassle...

I'd wait until they go bad and then go ahead and have head work done at the same time.

I always read it was the DOHC 4.6s that had the horrid valve guides due to the valve train geometry putting way too much sideload on them. I wouldn't worry about it on the SOHC unless you are consuming lots of oil.

I have the DOHC and the SOHC.Both have about the same amount of miles on them.SVO,you're actually the first person I've heard this from.Almost everyone I've discussed this issue with agreed that the SOHC is the one more commonly having valve guide issues.Anyway,it's not bad at all on the oil.Hell,it's not even noticeable unless I let it idle for a good while then give it some gas..Appreciate the input though...How's that M3 fund cmin along?

The M3 fund is attending graduate school. The M3 support fund, aka wife, is making all As on the way towards finishing her bachelors in finance. I can't wait until she graduates and gets a job.... I can afford toys then. In the meantime, I'll play my drums, dream, and maybe throw a turbo on the Slugmobile.

BTW, I always read that the valvetrain geometry was hosed on the pre '98 4 cams which is one of the reasons Ford redesigned the heads for '99. There was a guy selling a fix back in '97/8 that moved one of the tensioners on the timing chains to fix a problem. I can't remember the name or link, but I might have it in an old MM&FF. It was a small add in the back. If you have the stack when MM&FF had their project '97 Cobra, then you'll have the ad.

I used to own a '97 myself.... RioRed no less, #301; 1st '97 in WA state IIRC. I bought it in Oct of '96. It got traded off in Jan of '01.
