Valiant now has electronic ignition

I just installed the Mopar Performance electronic ignition conversion kit on the old 225 /6 and DAMN! I should have done this first! This is as big a gain for the thing as when i swapped the 170 for the 225. Timing is roughly 25-30deg BTDC. I've spun more left rear tire on this thing in the last 3 days than in the last 7 months since the motor swap. Muhuhahaha!

Those slants seem to like a fast curve and about 35 BTDC or more ..... I'm @ 3500 feet so maybe a little less closer to sea level.

Yeah, electronic ignitions on slants are a very good idea. Even if you don't get any horsepower gain, it sure beats having to adjust the points when the distributor's tucked between the fender and engine block.

You have the IGNITION timing set to 25-30deg BTDC???

Is this a normal thing for an electronic? I was always under the impression that the points type was set at ~7 BTDC, so I figured the electronic would be the same.

Where am I wrong here?

I set my timing to total with timing tape and a light, so that's 35 total. I go 41 degrees total on my 440! (I'm at altitude.) You are setting for initial (7 btdc) Try 12 initial you will feel it in the bottom end.

Timing tape? Wassat?

It's degreed tape that usually flies off the balancer unless ya epoxy or jb weld it on! It just shows ya more degrees so you can set yr total timing. it's handy for recurving yr distributor cuz you can see where you are at at certain rpms... Sort of a poor mans dial-back but more accurate IMO.

So how do you place it correctly? Just set the #1 cylinder to TDC and place it on according to what your timing is currently set to?

dont use a timing tape or rely on a dial back timing light. (1) buy a positive stop to go in the spark plug hole for less than $10(mancini) & use it to see if TDC on the dampener is perfect. if not remark it. (2) scribe a mark on both sides of the elastomeric ring that seperates both sections of the harmonic balancer so you can eyeball it at future intervals for slippage (3) measure along the curved diameter of the harmonic balancer & make marks for the degrees you need. on a 7 & 1/4" diameter balancer .0632683" is 1 degree so grab your calculator. 2.21= 35 degrees 2.40 =38 2 & 1/4" is between 35 & 36 degrees. dial back lights aren't accurate they are only an expensive inaccurate toy & timing tapes fly off if the surface isn't cleaned & sanded & glued & the elastomeric ring on a harmonic balancer can slip so this covers all bases. just use a damn dremel tool cut a notch for TDC use a quality timing light ala snap-on mac matco they dailback just fine.
