anybody know how much power they made stock and at what RPM. Also, how much did they weigh? Are they an I-4 design, flat-4?
I've got an insane idea...

The early engines (1200) were 40 HP, the 1300 in '66 was 50, the '67 - '69 1500 was 53 horse, and the later 1600s ranged from 60 HP in '71 to 50 HP in '74.
A VW air cooled engine weighs about 250-275 pounds, depending on the shrouding and cooling fan on or off.
100 HP is pretty easy to get with the right cams and carbs. They don't rev real high though without a lot of work.

They're actually quite popular for small homebuilt aircraft - air cooled, light, easy 70 horse...

Mini Puller?? I friend of my Dad used to have a mini puller. He ran a 1600 cc VW on alcohol, in an old snapper tractor frame that had been stretched about 2 feet.
If you need any more info on the VW's, let me know. My Dad used to rebuild VW's on the side, and build Dune Buggies. If he doesn't know an answer, he can usually find the answer from one of his friends.
