4 Seater?

Hi all,

This really isn't a tech question but I didn't see a general discussion area other than "the pit" and this isn't offensive, or shouldn't be anyway

I'm looking to sell my truck (66 GMC K-20 Camper Special) and buy a car, or maybe even a trade. Easy right? NEVER, I'm married. I need a car with 4 seats (we have kids) and I want a sports car for the first time in my life preferably under $5,000 that is the max I will probubly get out of my truck, and more than 8 mile per gallon. Now that I have limited myself in like every way possible and still include the work Sports and Car in the same sentance I need help. I know a few of the Camero's had 4 seats, there is a very rare Corvette out there that I will never be able to afford that had 4 seats, any other ones? I know the Mustang is a 4 seater but after my experiance with ford I'm not buying one any time soon again. I'm not looking for something real exotic like a Ferrari or Lambo or Pantera, just something with 4 seats and some descent HP.

I bought a 2002 Road Star Warrior earlier this year and that 102 c.i. engine on a motorcycle has got me with the HorsePower Bug.

Any Ideas are appreciated. Thanks All

All Camaro's are 4 seaters. If ya like them, you might find one for about 7K. Finding one for 5K isn't gonna be easy though, if you want a V8 and don't want a 305 powered car or an old one. I don't know how bad your Ford experience was, but I know you can find Fox body 5.0HO's in the 87-93 range that won't cost more than 5K, but you'll have to look around.

Otherwise, you're goin' way back in year models and to find a good car, with a V8 and decent power, you'll probably spend more than 5K anyway. I'm a Mustang guy, so I lean towards those, but honestly, for under $5,001, you're almost limited to that if you want decent power. Good luck.

Thanks It'llrun.

I actually found a few Camero's for under 4-5K and a few firebirds also, one actually wants to trade for a truck, we might be able to make a deal. I'll look into the Mustangs again and see what I can find, I know they used to be the best bang for the buck un upgrades also, but I dont prefer working on them and I do all my own work. In my opinion easiest engine to work on is chevy. Expectially on the old point and condenser engines.

Do you know if the firebirds are 4 seaters also? I know the TransAM used to have a good V8.

Basically it comes down to all 3 of them for under 5K "in good condition", what id the gas mileage like on the 85-95's? I heard it was like 20-23mpg. I'm used to 8-10mgp if I'm lucky in my old beasts that I like to drive

thanks agian for all the help all

Yeah, the firebird is basically the same car as the camaro.. Both have 4 seats, but I hope your kids are very small if you plan on getting one (same goes for the mustang). A midget would feel cramped in those tiny seats.

I've seen T-Type regals in the 5-6k range.. Ever considered one of those? They aren't really sporty (IMO), but they can sure haul ass with a few cheap mods.

Thanks EvilLS1

Yea they are pretty small now, one is 4 and two are 9 (twins), all girls. I figure I have about 3 to 4 more years before I'm doomed, so I better enjoy it now

I used to have an 87 Mustang LX, it was a pretty good car that I bought from Mom, little did I know that Mom had no idea what a radtiator or transmission flush was, I thin kit might have had one tune-up before I got it in 92 and almost regualr oil changes. So I ended up with a basket case, not Fords fault by any means if anyone was wondering if this is all I had against ford. It had enough room for 5 men and a female or two if everyone piles in just right

Taurus SHO, maybe an old BMW 3 series, Stealth/3000GT, older 280ZX/300ZX, T-Bird Super Coupe, clapped-out old Porsche 928...

I saw an 87 GN advertized just two days ago for a mere 6K.. It's in N.C. and I have no idea what shape it's in, but that's an excellent choice, for more room while still having power, although not a V8. They're pretty quick.

I can't say what the average mileage is in a Camaro with a 350, prior to 1993, but it's likely in the 21-23mpg range on the hwy. Post 93(to 95) is somewhere in 25-26mpg range hwy. an 87-93 Mustang averages about 25mpg hwy. My 95 wasn't any better, but got around 25 itself.

Like Evil said... Small kids! I'm sure I've said before, older than 10... not made to fit in the rear of these cars. The seats in the F-body (Camaro/Firebird/ TransAm) are a bit lower in relation to the floor than those of a Fox body Mustang, making it a little more difficult for an adult to exit. Otherwise, they're about the same tight fit and not so comfy ride. Still, more comfy than the back of (or front) a pick up... Of course, if it's yours... Just stay in the drivers seat and the rear ride won't matter!

Try a T-Bird Russell...Either a Super Coupe or a 4.6 LX..The SC is a 6 cylinder with a blower and the LX is a v8...There out ther if you look for a while for very reasonable prices...If you can find 1 try it out ...I'm pretty happy with mine. There's all kinds of tuning to do to the v8 since it shares it's power plant with the Mustang GT..All kinds of after market parts available from simple exhaust to blowers...Try this link and check'em out..There very roomy and pretty fun for a bigger sized car..tccoa.com

Thanks again,

Now for a couple stupid questions, what is a GN? and which body is the F-Body? I haven't really kept up with cars beyond about 1973, usually I prefer cold hard steal between me and these California drivers.

Not so sound like a mean a#% but as for the back seats, who cares there just kids , but seroiusly, they are only in my car long enough to get to school or maybe go out for dinner once in a blue moon. I spend at least an hour and a half a day in it (If I dont have any work meetings) and I am the one that has to pay for it . All I need it a comfy seat , descent stereo :, cup holder and some grab the seat of your pants torque and life is gooooood

T-Birds not a bad idea, I drove a frineds in like 93 or 94 and it had some descent size nads on it. It was the LX, I pretty much tuned out T-birds after I saw the new style they have now. The early 90's were nice though.

GN's are Grand Nationals, a Buick Regal with a Turbocharged 3.8L V6. F-bodies are all Camaro/Firebird models.

Fox bodies are 79-93 Mustangs (they don't have cup holders, but a 20oz. will fit between the E-brake handle and the passenger seat).

You may also find interest in the Pontiac Grand Prix. The 89 was a good year, with a 3.1L turbocharged V6, and some later years were available with a supercharged 3.8, among other engines.

Well, you could get a pretty good Chevelle, Charger, or the like for $5,000. You'd have to put some sort of aftermarket cup holders in though - some cars from the '60s had cup holders that were only supposed to be used at drive ins while the car was parked.

A good modern choice would be a '90s era T-bird. V8 power with a real back seat. You might also wish to test drive a V6 powered Nissan Maxima.
