my car (87 Trans Am GTA) has the TPI 5.7 350 w/ the automatic transmission, it won't be anytime soon, but sooner or later i want to switch it to a manual transmission. pontiac didn't make a manual transmission to go w/ the 350 (don't know y, but i've heard the 5 spd that went w/ the 305 couldn't handle the extra tourque the 350 produced-- i thought that sounded funny and don't know if there's any truth behind it, but i do know that that tranny won't work) my ? is what manual tranny can i use, i'm pretty sure i could get the T-56 but those r pretty expensive. the vette had a manual tranny w/ their 350, but i don't know what they used, my efforts to find out didn't come through with any useful info but, to be honest, i didn't spend too much time looking
thanks in advance for any info

A t-5 tranny setup from a 305 will fit, but they aren't as beefy and you may have to replace them sooner behind the 350 for obvious reasons. If you got your heart set on having a manual maybe you should try and find one out of a 350 IROC?
Good luck!

Well, Skeez, probably because they never put a manual in a 350 IROC, they're all autos.
The C4 Corvettes of that vintage used the 4+3 tranny. What is was was a Borg Warner T-10 4-speed rebuilt by Doug Nash with an add-on overdrive that functioned in all gears but first. They were kind of tricky to adjust, though. You could probably find a good T-10, or even a M-21 Muncie for cheap and drop it in. Probably an easier swap than a later T-56, unless you really need the overdrive for running big gears.

Well spit on my head, my ears are burnin'!
Another tidbit to store in the ol' noggin! :P

basically what the other guys said. The t-5 is weak and won't last long under any abuse. The t-56 is the way to go, but expensive. The vettes had a zf 6 speed, thats probibly even more expensive then a t-56 and less common.
basically you are left with the options Penske posted.

I think they make a Tremec that fits Camaros. That would probably do the trick if they do.

ya but for less you could install a t-56.
