Well i finally did it. I made the appointment. Voight Racing in Bridgeport, CT for:
3.73's
new bearings
rebuild posi(see below)
and!!!!!! full single 3" cat-back. (see below)

After a long conversation with the guy he told me to spend less money and just have him rebuild my posi unit over getting the Eaton one. He pointed to his sons car as an example. Sons car is a 93 stang, supercharged with a stock posi unit, runs mid 11's.
He also said that the Eaton unit isn't anything special and it's gonna wear out just like the ford unit. So i saved about 250-300 bucks.
Now for the cool part. He has access to a mandrel bender and can do a single 3" catback for me. I already replaced the Downpipe last year with a 3" mandrel with a magnaflow hiflow cat.

Eaton

check this too.

Auburn Pro

Eaton

Trac-Loc

Can you see the differences in these? I expect you can. While I don't completely disagree with rebuilding your Trac-Loc rearend, it's not as good as the Eaton you were considering. It will wear out sooner too. If you were really concerned about having a locking diff., I'd say get a spool, mini spool, or for street use, probably a Detriot Locker. I don't think you are and I expect the factory unit is sufficient for your car. But make sure you are aware of which are better in reality as well as for your particular application. Sometimes people say things without really explaining and it seems like it's all cut and dry.... It's not that easy overall. I just want you to see there are obvious differences in design of these carriers. Don't forget the link below the 1st pic of the opened Eaton. It's added info.

The was some god info, thank you.
I think i'm still gonna stick with the ford trac-loc though mostly just from the price difference. I ask him about the performance difference between the units and he say that the EATON was a heavy duty unit but.....goes to compare with the sons mustang. The EATON would be over doing it i've realized and i am saving almost $300. I even asked what the charge would be to rebuild the clutch packs if it needed to be done down the road; He say $200, for the job, part labor everything. Maybe if i lived closer to a dragstrip i'd go EATON.

I figured you'd stick with what you had. In your case, I would too, no doubt. It's even easier to decide once you have a better understanding of the differences. Glad that helped.

I'd get it rebuilt now and save LOTS of money, later.
Since he's replacing the gears, he'll have it just seconds away from pulling out the pinions & clutches. The clutches cost me about $45. If you walked in to ... oh, Idunno, anywhere, you shouldn't pay more than about $65-70.
If I were doing the ring & pinion (plus bearings) swap for you, I'd only charge the cost of the parts, in addition to the rest of the job. That's (about ... Idunno what the job costs where you are) a $135 savings AND you won't have to worry about it for years!

I think the stock rear is fine for what you're doing, but there really is NO comparison between stock and Eaton (not even close!). If you ever see the 2 cases next to each other, you might not even believe the HUGE difference! The Eaton is HUGE compared to the stock unit. In fact, the Eaton makes a Motorsport look kinda weak ... and that's just the cases.

I will just be getting the Tracloc rebuilt instead of getting the eaton

How many of you guys have trashed an Auburn lately? I just put a new one in my white convert (with 4.10's) and have not even run it yet. But in the last 4 or so months I have had 4 Auburns for 9" rears go south.
Two started slipping, and two chewed up the cones big time. I hated to give the customer the old "I told ya to buy a Detroit Locker" speech...anyone else seen these non-rebuildable POS units die like this?

I've heard alot of trash talk about the Auburns, and i was told to stay away. Mostly for the fact that they were not rebuildable.

My Auburn wore out, but when I added more torque, both wheels locked in anyway. It never broke. Of course, it's not new. I think I've had it since 1994 or so. The gears are worn badly though...danged leaks... Anyway, I've got a spool now, so it doesn't matter anymore. Detroits are certainly better, but with C-clip elims, I couldn't even find one... And they're expensive.

I was talking about for a 9" though. So no C-clips were ever in the picture! Thank God!
