Why would anyone want to increase the HP. of a 5.0 engine when the susp and design of the car is squirely enough with just the original 5.0

Maybe they want a quicker car? Stock Fox body suspension isn't comfortable at high speed, but that's no reason to avoid making the engine more powerful.

That's like asking why people modify the suspension of their road racing cars when they're still low on power... They do it because they want the actual benefit that others may not like.

Im talking from a purly daily driver and everyone knows that with any kind of moisture on the road and the light rear end well you know now dont get me wrong even with all the design flaws and the 197,00 original miles who can complain I was just cosidering a rebuld at some time as im using about aquart per 3 to 4oo miles and am wondering that maybe the 98 4.6 cars might be a worthy succesor to old reliable any one have any suggestions or ideas

If you're gonna go 4.6, atleast go with a Cobra. A lot more parts available, and they seem more worth the effort than with the SOHC cars.

I have a slightly modded 92 GT, it has your basic bolt ons, and stock suspension. 170k miles. Even on wet roads, I can take off without trouble. I guess it comes with practice, I dunno. When I first got the car I had trouble, but after 5 years its easy. Clutch control goes a long way.

people use mustangs for daily drivers?

My mustang is a daily driver. If you try driving in the rain isn't a problem at all, but if you want to have fun it's just a stomp on the loud pedal away. I do have some suspension done, ford racing springs, competion engineering adjustable shocks, upper and lower rear control arms southside traction bars, strut tower brace. It is alot of fun to drive in the curvy stuff.

Posted by: Tang

mine has no aftermarket suspension. All stock suspension and 185k miles, and even with the bolt ons and the 3.73's it still isnt a problem. Like I said, driver ability goes a long way :P

I've got all drag racing suspension under mine. I did 170 in it coming back from the Dalhart Drags a few weekends ago. Not very stable, but I'm still around to talk about it.

Learn how to control your car, and you can drive it in any weather. Back when my Mustang was my Daily Driver, I'd drive it on ice covered roads and highways all season long.

i was kidding when i asked,... been into the mustang "racing" scene for around 5 years now.
i drive the 86 on the street on occasion, it could be a daily driver but would eat all the $$ up on gas.
i also run c clip elim's so i have to baby it every time i turn,...

86five-o,...don't those south sides pop and groan in the turns? mine do big time,...

Posted by: VETTKLR

What kinda C-clip elim's do you run and how old are they? I just picked up a 33-spline spool and axels that came with the C-clip elim's from Moser. I thought the good 'ole days of leaky C-clip elim's were gone and forgotten?

ps: Ditch those South Sides for some trick spherical bushing Upper/Lower Control arms from Maximum Motorsport!

Posted by: Grape Ape

I haven't noticed any leaks with my C-clip elims, etc... Except the darned rear end cover... These aftermarket pieces are said to leak regularly. I think I can fix mine though, with better adjustment of the bearing cap bolts. I think they're too tight, causing trouble with the cover sealing properly. We'll see, once I get moved and have time to finish all the small stuff... I'm just glad it runs at this point.

Posted by: 86pushrod

as far as my c clip eliminators, they are the one peice moser's the strange 3 peice are said to leak, anyhow i went to napa and got a seal i measured the od of the axle and the id of the axle tube and got a seal so the fluid barely gets to the sealed bearings,.. i then just used an assload of moser silicone around the block.
i run a ta rear cover that leaked with a gasket, i ditched the gasket and just used silicone and no more leaks.
im not a huge fan of the way the southside's sound or handle on the street but they plant the hides and it goes! so im sticking with em

I used SSM's for several years. After 1 or 2 yrs, I welded them at the brackets that used to swivel and creek when turning. That made the car launch better at the drag strip, but it didn't seem to have any adverse affect on the street, although I'm sure it would show some effects if I were trying to have better handling.

In 2001, I installed (chromemoly) double adjustable uppers and single adjustable lowers and those are much better than the SSM's for my needs. I also have Moser 33 spline axles, C-clip eliminators and spool. For a drag setup, it doesn't get much better than this unless you go away from the stock style rear suspension. My front suspension is also all changed around, from the K-member up and out.

Posted by: 86pushrod

yup, did the tubular k member as well, coil overs,90/10's,a-arms,took the bumper out and lost around 75 lbs on the motor/accesories.... it still doesn't lift the front as much as i would like but its consistant... thinking of moving the motor to the rear mounts (inch back)

i just don't want to cut the driveshaft.

Posted by: Grape Ape

I'd rather keep all 4 tires on the ground. It's (somehow) easier to steer that way! LOL

Posted by: 86pushrod

with my thinking im prolly gunna total the car trying to stand it on its ass....lol

Posted by: Grape Ape

You can buy my 82 shell(w/ 10pt cage) to do that with... Just come and get it...

Posted by: 86pushrod

mabey when i flip the 86..lol

Posted by: Grape Ape

It's about to be too late... If I don't sell this car soon(w/i 10 days), it will be stripped and what's left will meet its end... I'm not going to move it north... I've already got 3 to deal with and just don't want this one anymore.

My red convert has Wolfe suspension in it and a tubular front suspension. Hooked almost too good with the 306 CV nitrous engine in there...we'll see when the forced inducton set-up is done.

I thought it was funny this guy slamming on the stock chassis...I know people in the 8's (1/4 mile) with the STOCK OEM rear suspension in place! One guy has a 408 nitrous motor with a C4. Simple and fast like hell!

Posted by: Grape Ape

Stock OEM suspension? I can't see that living through the launch of an 8 second car without at least having re-enforcement plates welded on. It's just so cheesy and flexible, it seems it would twist and rip out. I've seen several 8 second cars with Wolfe or a Wolfe take-off though. Low 8's, for that matter.
