Quickly someone........Ok my bell housing was broke but I didnt know it, so I kept trying to adjust the clutch, you know how you lift the pedal and push it back to the floor.
Well, now that Im changing the bell housing, how do I ghet the slack back int he cable ?

Self-Adj. clutch quadrant under the dash...It's a total bitch to get to. I think you can push back the pawl gear and pull it back a few teeth with the clutch end off the fork. You know, now would be a pretty good time to buy an adjustable clutch cable.

buy yourself a steeda double hook quadrent, ditch the stock plastic self adjusting p.o.s. quadrent ... get a firewall adjuster and a stock replacement cable.... it'll take the better part of a day to do but its worth it.
good luck

I'd use an adjustable cable as well as replacement quadrant and I'd still use the firewall adjuster. I don't think the stock quadrant is as bad as everyone makes it out to be, but it could indeed be a better design. Hey, at least it's a cable instead of the all to common hydraulic systems used on most cars and trucks today.

Well, I got slack pulled back in it, but its still doing the same thing. The clutch won't disengage all the way, gears hard to change. I can lift the pedal, push it to the floor, and it will change ok for about 3 or 4 times then its back to not letting go. Guess its just time for the manual stuff. My cable is less than a year old.
I guess 185k miles, the quadrant is worn out huh ?...lol
I might have screwed it up the way I got slack back in it. I lifted the pedal like I was gonna adjust it, and had my cousin under the car pull on the cable, it done the trick. Then I just did the normal adjustment procedure to get the slack back out.
Ohh well, so its poll time. Whats the best, easiest piece to install ?
If the manuals adjust from under the car thats no biggie, then I dont need the firewall adjuster.

I just used the adjustable cable and the Steeda quadrant on mine(years ago). The quadrant lasts forever, but the cables never do. I would get the firewall ajuster too though, just to ease that end now and later. The complete set sells new for about $90-$100, including the cable, quadrant and firewall adjuster.

I had two of the stock plastic quadrants fail on me.... albeit one had 130K miles on it.... but still it sucked.
Under the dash (you'll have to lay on your back, and it also involves lots of swearing trying to get your hand up in there), you'll see a white plastic gear. It's above the brake pedal, not the clutch pedal. They are one unit, and the clutch pedal has a shaft at the top and put the quadrant / cable assembly above the brake pedal. On the top of that white gear is a little tiny white plastic gear (about the size of a thimble). It is spring loaded to click to a new adjustment when you pull up on the pedal. That is the ratchet pawl. You'll have to push it back the opposite way so it isn't engaged. The pedal will drop freely to the floor then. Then you can put the new cable on, and adjust.
I've also had the pressed ball on the end of the stock cable on the clutch fork just decide to let go of the cable.
If I get another Mustang, I'm gonna get the aftermarket quadrant, cable and firewall adjuster and pay someone else $50 to lay on their back and do all that cussing for me.

Well, like i said the cable doesnt have hardly any miles on it. The quadrant just won't hold the slack out, so my clutch is constantly dragging, which doesnt hurt much the clutch is shot. It just makes changing gears tough.

You use the clutch between gears? After take off, you could probably forego the clutch until you're coming to a stop again. Well, except maybe for 5th.

A word of advice.Remove the driverside seat if you replace the quadrant. It makes life a whole lot easier.

if you plan on switching the clutch anytime soon a word to the wise,... i installed a clutch around a month ago and ate the disc and burned my pressure plate because i trq. the bolts clockwise instead of in a star pattern,...it created an uneven load.
Posted by: Grape Ape
You did that? Shame shame... Oh well.

was in a rush was one of those dumb things i forgot that made me think about slowing it down next time i swap a clutch,... having problems with my car eating clutch's.. ive gone through 3 in 4 months or less,...im thinking of getting a ram long style off my freind,i just dont like how much pressure the pedal has during its complete engagement stroke. begining to think somthing isn't line-ing up between the crank and bellhousing

I got between 18 and 25K from ZOOM-II Kevlar clutches, when I had a 5speed. These days, people are going nuts over SPEC clutches, but the $200 ZOOM-II worked for me. Of course, clutches are a "good luck with that" item... Some last, some don't.
More expensive, but even better(the best I've seen for daily cars), is the McLoed brand. They run about $1,000 though on a high end version. They are very strong once properly installed and adjusted(they're very finicky) and, I've seen them hang tough into the 10's with no sign of trouble.
I got sick of breaking 5speeds, so I went back to an auto and haven't had many troubles since, save the crappy C4 I got, which lasted all of 7 passes before blowing up.

im surprised my tremec is rated for 400 ft lbs or some shit like that,.. and it's lasted this long,...(3years with a violent 306 and a good 12or more 10 sec passes on new combo with street use)i have a t5 sitting in my garage im dying to upgrade to a g force. if that happens and it more than likley will i would like my buddies ram long clutch or a centerforce dual friction,... i hear good and bad things about spec clutch's...never anything bad about centerforce or clutchmaster (diaphram clutch's).i lift when i shift anyway,.. ive never seen anything but a broken tranny from powershifting without lifting.

see another granny shifter (not breaking trannys)

i wouldnt say i granny shift at all,... i just don't keep the car at w.o.t. with the clutch depressed shifting...
granny shifting doesnt win races.... lol
it saves tranny's

I've seen cars powershifted with even T5's that survive for awhile. The Tremec 3550 is a verystrong unit. I punished one for just over 2yrs before it let go(I'm a tad rough with them). Even so, it wasn't "broken," but it was quite worn out due to the oil plug rattling loose and falling out once... I drove it for about 1,320ft after that... I was close to home. Anyway, that trans is excellent and I'd never use a T-5 G-force instead of a Tremec 3550, personally. I looked into the new T5, since they're made and sold out of Ft. Lauderdale/Pompano and I was able to see one opened, cut in half, in fact. I was impressed, but it just doesn't add up to me. The Tremec has been made in basically the same way as this "new" G-force backed T5 since it's inception. Since you have it, you probably should keep it. If/when it breaks, get another, or go auto.
I don't care for CenterForce clutches either, but that's another story. And I never powershifted either...

im not fond of the noise or the vibration t5's give off,... but they do make more rear wheel hp and are faster than tremec's. Why?... because they have less intrenal parts and are on a single shaft design where as the tremec has 3. i love how smooth the tremec feels,.. it has no vibration and is alot quiter and smoother than the t5... im just intrested in the g force because they are suppost to handle 600+ hp.. i could always get the tremec to hold that. alot has to due with how rough you are on the tranny. i witnessed a 9 sec pass on a world class t5 before and the shifts were pathetic,so was his launch.my car is pretty light as well,.. wich is a huge parts saver on the tranny. i would like to go auto but simply can't afford to.

Ahh, someone's been looking into the Pony's future! Is that you, Miss Cleo? ...Is this me?

I found out after years of replacements, I couldn't afford NOT to use an automatic.
I understand your thoughts on the T5 vs. 3550, but I don't care what anyone says, the T5 is inferior and always has been. The straightcut gears used in the fairly new "G-force" designed unit are definitely a step up. But when you look at the original, anything would be a step up. The gears still aren't as strong as the 3550, by design. They simply can't fit enough metal into that small space when you boil it down to the engineering. The 3550 is much like the old Top Loader, but with a 5th gear. The T5 was made to be used with 4cyl and 6cyl. applications, and doesn't handle V8 torque very well..

ya i can agree on that,... im not a fan of t5's at all the g force just looked or sounds good,... ya know how that norm.turns out, guess we will see what there made of in nmra next year.
all the pure street/real street cars run tko's deep in the 10's and high 9's so the ttc product is stout from what ive seen...
there is nothing wrong with mine as of now so i'll most likley keep it how it is until it needs a rebuild,.. then mabey some lyberty gears and a tko II conversion is in place???????
Posted by: Grape Ape
It's been available for over a year now. I still don't know anyone using it. A guy named Paul something, from the Pompano area came up with the thing, but while he was and is a trans rebuilder, he didn't have the tooling to make the actual gears, so he enlisted G-force, who surprisingly took him up on it. I'm sure several have sold, but I'm waiting to hear of someone using one.

How hard/expensive would it be to swap a bigblock toploader into a Foxbody with a smallblock? I probably won't since I don't want to hear the bumblebee hum everytime I drive it, but I can get a Toploader core dirt cheap I think.
Posted by: Grape Ape
As long as you have the correct bell housing, it should fit right on. The only concern then, would be making certain the overall trans length was correct. That way, you won't have to cut another or a larger hole into your console/shifter area. You'll also want to make sure you have the correct slip yoke.

i could ask someone i know running a toploader.... very stout tranny.
