How Much Does a Stock 2003 Mustange SVT have?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I was talking to my friend that owns A 2003 SVT he said that he was dyno at 440 at the wheels. I am heaving hard time believing it. I know he moded the motor Cat back, Pulley, NGK Plugs, and Chip. Ether the dyno he is using is add 22% for drive train loss on his ticket or the guy does not know how to dyno cars. Plus he is only getting 12.7 on the 1/4 mile. I have a friend Across the street that has a 1998 SVT with a s-Trim Vortec supercharger and Port and polished heads, Headers, 42lb Injectors, with a after cooler, and MSD setup and computer. And he is running 12.4 1/4 with the worst traction you can have. And he dyno at 435 to the wheels.

What do you Ford guys think.

440 at the wheels, i believe it. Those 03 Cobras respond great to simple mods.

According to Ford's Web site Its only 390 HP at the crank Are you telling me that its under rating Almost 100 horse power. Or is there some kind or mistake on there site.

well i will help clear up your doubts,.. most people can't belive their eye's either,... we have a guy in the club up here, stock 03 cobra,.. put a smaller blower pulley on it and a set of headers/with a cat back system and the car put 460 to the dyno,... i have it all on video. even us ford owners were in awe.
the new cobra's are just plain nasty. they make power,...the engine sufficates in stock strim. if you simply add better exhaust and cold air kit you pick up assloads of power.also how much power a car has doesnt mean its gunna be faster than a car with less power. thats up to the driver, vehicle weight, and the gears out back.the car does have close to 390 hp mabey a tad more in show room trim,.. most of this was done to help insurance or so ive been told.the car is heavy, but if ya know how to drive and lighten the car up some, with very little $$$ invested in the car you will see deep 11's no prob. what car does this in its stock trim for 34k???? better start lookin....... let me know what ya come up with.

Chad, you're truly confused. First off, since when does 390 to 440 add up to anywhere near 100? That's 50, for those with horrible math skills.

Secondly, the mods listed(if they're on the car) might very well add enough power to see 440rwhp. It's not uncommon for 2003 Cobras to see that power level with only minor upgrades.

Third, your friend with the 1998 Cobra has a car that weighs roughly 400 lbs LESS than a stock 2003 Cobra, even after adding a supercharger. Furthermore, the Vortech has a completely different powerband effect, which can affect the cars 1/4 mile ET's, depending on all the different factors, including traction.

Next, I think you need to find out what has really been to to the 98's heads. It's uncommon to hear anyone has had those heads ported, or polished. They flow immense amounts of air while stock, even on the older models.

And finally, the 390fwhp rating is clearly a low figure. The average factory stock Cobra makes more than 360rwhp, meaning it's around the 430fwhp range in reality. Insurance reasons seem to give credence for manufacturers to underrate their powerful cars. Sometimes, a car is in a category that won't be affected much by hp rating. The Mustang is not in one of those categories.

For a guy who was claiming he'd have some 500hp from his 3.8L V6, you sure sound disgruntled about a serious V8 making only 440.

Well, there isn't anything left to be said that hasn't been siad already. The '03 Cobra is a PIG in the weight category, but can be lightened up. Also, since GM underrated the F-Body cars, why can't Ford do it to ?

As these guys said, the '03 Snakes are sufficating trying to breath and push air through the stock exhaust. I would like them better with a solid rear axle, which I'm sure thats an easy mod.

I'd say just jump on over to www.stangnet.com or www.corral.net and hit the message boards. Probably won't be hard at all to find your proof of what those cars can do.

By the way fellas, I was out of the game awhile, has Bob Cosby started tinkering with an '03 Cobra yet ?

390 is to the crank - #'s came from Ford
440 to the wheels (what chad stated) would equal somewhere around 525HP - 550HP to the crank (depending on drivetrain loss - 15%? 20%?).

THAT's where he got the 100 extra HP from...where actually it's more like an extra ~150HP

Either way, he's off by 50... I think he should've taken a line of fwhp or rwhp and stuck with it, or at least explained his thoughts.

I think he meant 390 fwhp = roughly 340 rwhp and then compared that to the 440 rwhp. He probably doesn't know that 03 Cobras are underrated.

I don't know why the hell I said "crank". I meant flywheel. oops.

Posted by: woodchuckbob

here's to clear up on the horsepower... he probably didn't gain THAT much hp... He already had over 415 hp at the flywheel... a friend of mine is a mechanic at a lincoln dealership and a buddy of his across the street at the ford dealership bought a 03 cobra and dyno'd it. Came out with over 415 hp... apparently ford downrated the hp to 390 because of insurance purposes.

hope that answers any questions

Oh, one more thing...

this is directed to Tang. I can't figure out why the hell you would want a solid rear axle. I mean, even my SVT Focus has independent rear suspension for a reason... handling.

Posted by: Tang

I would want a solid rear axle for a reason.....drag racing

Bob Cosby put a solid rear in a '99 or '01 Cobra (dont remember now), and he was kicking ass with that thing. The IRS just wasn't meant to be making hard launches. True, it has been umproved over the '00 and '01 cars, it still isn't for drag racing.
