I am looking to get a 96- 98 Mustang SVT Cobra. What exactly are the differences between the Cobras and the GT's? Cobras are more dough, so they gotta be a lot better. Also, what is the difference between the 4.6 motors and the 5.0's? The 98 I am looking at has the 4.6, but a buddy told me that two people he knew had the 4.6 motor blow on them. What are the flaws, if any, with the 4.6? Are the cobras realy worth the extra money??

Differences between the GT's and Cobras:
The GT's are packing 2-valve Single overhead cam 4.6 V-8's
Cobras have the 4-valve higher-revving Dual overhead cam 4.6.
The 5.0 (302) motor was a good old fashioned pushrod V-8 that has been around since about 1979. The aftermarket parts you can get for this motor is absolutely unbelievable.
The 4.6 (281) motor is Ford's basic V-8 that is found in everything from Mustangs to Full-Size pickups. The camshaft on these motors sit on top of the heads, so there are no pushrods.
I bet those blown 4.6's your buddy's talking about had something to do with a loose nut behind the wheel. There's an '99 F-150 that we use out in the oilfield with the 4.6. That poor thing gets more abused than any other 4.6 I've ever seen! We've never had a problem with it. These 4.6's and 5.4's are Fords new V-8's and the pushrod 302's are long-gone.
I dig the hell out of the Cobras. With a few mods like gears, a shifter, some exhaust, they really scream! One more thing...the Cobras really, really, really like power adders!!!
By the way, Welcome to MMC.net

Well, not to just be correcting, but the 302 has been around since 1968. It started becoming known as the 5.0 in mustangs in 1979, and the first 5.0 HO came out in the '82 Mustangs. I think with the HO came a difference balance, the 1968-1981 302's used a 28oz flywheel, and in '82 they went to a 50oz flywheel. Also the 5.0 HO shares the same firing order as a 351W
(1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 vs 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 that the regular 302's have)
I think thats everything. I may be wrong on the years of the flywheel balance, but I know Im in the neighborhood with it.

Oh yea,
96-98 Cobras come with 305hp. They LOVE blowers and big gears. 4.10-4.30 out back and those cars are right at home. I didn't answer your question the first time. YES, the Cobras are well worth their money over a 96-98 GT, those cars are SLUGS. They struggle to make their advertised horsepower, which was 215 for 96 and 97, and 225 for 98.
The aftermarket has gotten pretty big for the modular motors now. Comp Cams is even making cams for them. When you find you one, try to find one some old fucker had, and never drove that much. That way you get a fresh canvas to start on.
Welcoem to MMC, and good luck on the car search.

You know what I meant, fucker!!! I don't think he's wanting to compare the quad cammers to a BOSS 302!!!
p.s. mizzonte, you get that Cobra yet?

Welcome to MMC.
The "5.0HO" was created by using the 351W's(marine) cam design/firing order. I always thought of that as the 83GT, but many changes were made along the way.
The 4.6 has basically nothing in common with the 5.0. The other important features have been clearly described. I know of a 4.6SOHC that had a factory defect causing a knock. That engine still lasted 70,000 miles. When I tore it down, I immediately found what caused the entire problem, a loose rod bolt. The 5.4(F-250) I use has no problems. So far, it's got over 105,000 miles on it and hasn't shown any signs of problems at all. It's never had work done, not even a plug change(which will come within the next 2weeks), just regular oil/filter changes with synthetic oil. That engine is amazingly solid and it's quite strong.

Also.If you do get the 96-98 GT and not the Cobra, get some PI heads of a 99 and up 4.6L engine from a wrecked car or any 99 and up 4.6L engine for that matter(2 valve of course). The 99 and up 2 valvers all have the same heads. They should give you at least an extra 25 to 35 horses guaranteed. If your slick, you can probly get'um of some unsuspecting victim's junker for cheap....Post pics when you get it and good luck.

Hey, that reminds me...Speaking of a knock...are the Mustang's 4.6 SOHC motors like the T-birds and Cougars from the '96 era? The rods were actually broken in two, instead of two separate machined pieces for the crank bearings.

No doubt, the engines are quite alike internally. The rod design is called "cracked rods" and oddly, it seems to work well. The name sure doesn't seem to reflect that though!

I didnt get the cobra yet, but i'm lookin at a 1998 SVT Cobra, white, 5 sp, power everything, 49,000 miles. The dealership wants 12,900./ I'm not quite ready to get it yet. I'm still lookin for that "great" deal. Is 12,900 worth it?

You might get a little below that, but the average retail is about $15,500 if it has leather, Mach 460 stereo, etc.(it should) Convertibles go for more, of course. Trade in value is probably about $13,000.
