what's going on everyone. here's what i'm looking to do. i currently have a 1976 Granada w/ 5.0 and C4 trans. engine is prestene, car itself is falling apart. so i've come across a nice 1992 hatchback in my area with a shot 4cyl. what am i looking at engine swap wise?? i as well have an 8" rear. i've gone over a few of the past post on this topic, and few people said you need a trans as well. and a new rear. would a c4 fit?? any help would be appreciated.

A C4 should fit, bit it might need a different length drive shaft. Ford make an aluminum one that works with a c4, aod, srod, or T-5 I think. As for the 8" rear end, that would have to be setup for the mustangs four link suspension. It would be easier to find an 8.8 out of a wrecked 86-93 5.0 mustang. There will be a ton of ods and ends things to tie up on this project, so I don't think I would attempt it if I need a daily driver fast.

The C4 isnt a hard swap at all. But like he said, the '92 has a 4 link rear suspension, so just find you an 8.8 somewhere and go from that. The 7.5" Rear thats in the '92 might suffice without a lot of abuse until you can get a better rear.

But with that '76 302 only putting out about 130hp, with 8:1 compression, I don't see you doing much damage on the 7.5 rear. Especially not through a stock C4.

With that swap, the Mustang might feel a touch faster than the Granada was, but I don't see it being worth the trouble unless you are going to do serious work to the motor and trans.

One last thing, you will need a oil pan from a 5.0 Mustang too. They are dual sump, I don't think the '76 Granada will match up (Im not 100% about that).

well for starters, what's going on! i appreciate the feedback. let me start by saying the 92 didnt fall through, or a better deal came up. but odds had it, i went into work tonight for some over time, and my project came up, and some guy i work with is going to sell me his 1990 LX with a shot 4cyl for $200. totally stoked over here!! excellent condition. anyway, i hope that helps me with monds??? i.e rear end swaping?? oil pan? and shitty story, i just threw away an 8.8 rear about a month ago cause it was getting in the way of my dads junk. go figure. i was also told the 7.5 rear wouldnt stand a chance. as for my engine, i expect to gain atleast 3 seconds off my 1/4 mile for the weight factor alone. every 50lbs equals a 1/10 sec off the 1/4, 1500lbs differene, being as i did the math right, thats an easy 3 seconds. than with my intake, which allows me safely 4700rpm's, eletric fan set up, and a nice exhuast, i should see a huge improvment over my granada, atleast hope so. all i have now is my stock headers if you want to call them that, stock Y pipe, which goes into a 2 1/2" straight pipe to a flowmaster deltaflow 40 series(sounds very nice actually) so i guess the rear end swap and oil pan swap still apply to the 1990?? and whats the deal with an pick up? "you need an oil pan/pick up" thanks

Yes, with the '90 you still need the rear end, and dual sump pan and pickup. www.50resto.com has the pans for $86.95 and the pickup tube is $33.95 . Pan part#LRS-6675A and Tube #LRS-6622A

I'm not trying to start a debate , but it works out to more like for every 100lbs you drop you pick up a tenth.

The model 302 you are working with, the heads aren't great and the cam is tiny. Remeber that motor was built for emissions, and 1976 was when converters were made mandatory. Find you some E7TE heads off of a '87-'95 5.0 atleast, '87-'97 5.0 Truck heads are the same thing, so that might be an easier way to get them. Then get you a cam, prefferibly a split duration cam. The SBF is handicapped in the exhaust port area, so a cam that will allow more lift and duration the exhaust side will help a lot. Then a Perf. RPM intake and 500cfm carb. You might have to notch the pistons for the valves with the E7 heads, not sure tho.

But again, I think the 7.5 rear will be fine. They handle the 190hp V6 Stangs, and a member here had a V6 Stang that ran 13.90 with the 7.5. So like I said, unless you change a lot of things, I don't see the 7.5 being a problem.

I'm not trying to burst your bubble, or down what you are doing. Infact its a good idea, and will make a fun project. But as it stands that motor is a tad anemic. 130hp and torque is probably in the 230ft/lb range.

The 7.5 was used in the gts from 79 till 85. It will live for a while unless you beat the hell out of it. I would consider it one of the parts I am looking for but not too actively. It is not the best rear for the job but I would worry about all the other stuff first.

I used the 7.5 in my 79 Mustang with the 302 that came in the car for years with 69 351 Windsor heads a mild cam headers Performer intake and 650 Holley. The Trans was a C-4 with a shift kit and a 2400 rpm converter.I did rebuild the posi and put in a set of used 3.45 gears out of a Ranger pickup.
This car ran 8.9s in the 1/8 mile and the rearend is still alive in another car.
I dragraced this thing for 4 years almost weekly in the summer.
I do think that the cars being an automatic and never using sticky race tires did help the rearend live.
I also know of a 83 Capri that runs 7.9-7.8s in the 1/8 that is using a 7.5.he also is running an auto(C-4 as well) with 4.10s and a mini spool.
He has been through a couple rearends though.
So if the rear is in good shape I wouldn`t worry to much until I got everything else ship shape.

and for the motor try a Performer cam kit and intake with a 600 Holley a set of cheap headers and duel exhaust not a lot of money and they will work good with the lack of compression and misserable heads. Also look through some junk yards for old Ranger pickups with 7.5 rears. They came stock with 3.45 gears.
through them into the rear in your Mustang and you`ll be supprised at the differance they make.

WOW!!! ok, thats a lot of stuff i didnt know. as for you bubble bursting, dont worry about it. i need to know the do's and donts. i'm somewhat new to the car industry, so everything you all tell me(assuming its accurate) cool!! as for my engine and performance, i'm not trying to make a super fast drag car. my engine has 96.5K miles. compression is 140 all around. and damn things purrrrrrrs! the intake and carb i did cause it was pretty cheap, and was told it would be my most drastic change for the money. like you all said in one way or another, this engine needs a lot of work to get it running tip top, and i'm not really trying to do that with this motor. i just want to be able to pull up to a light, smoke preferably anyone next to me, or atleas tgive them a run for the money. as for my rear, i'm looking to drop maybe 373? or 411 into it, as for my granada now, when i get up to about 80, my car feels like its going to fall apart, so i figure with my low end, me pullin 3000rpms doing 70, i can live with. i'm looking for TOURQE!! i want to be able to jump anyone off the line, and atleast killum for a few hundred yards. headers and exhaust is a must, especially since it will no longer have one when i swap from the 4 cyl. as for the pan and oil pump crap, thats more than i expected to pay. but guess thats cars for you eh. and i guess my 8" rear wont fit ?? ugh!! anyway, guess that sums it up for now. on that note, anyone looking for an inline 6 250ci engine(keeping trans) complete engine, with 59,597 miles??? kept it from another granada to drop in this one when my 302 went, but since than got into bigger displacment engines. let me know, thanks again, Eric

I got a stock dual sump 302 oil pan, it needs a good bead blasting. 10 bucks plus shiping and its yours

You can get the oil pump, and screen for about 30 bucks at any parts house

yo bro, i did want that oil pan. get up with me when you get a chance. and pics if you had them. i left you my email address to send to that i check more often than this. Eric, thanks
