How much horsepower does the chrysler 354 hemi put out???

Posted by: Grape Ape

The Hemi used in trucks is rated at 345hp. It doesn't even come close to reaching that, sadly. The new Hemi powered Durango is rated at 335hp.... What's up with that picture? Ratings go down from a full size pickup to a mid-size SUV?? I've seen all of 1 dyno result(248c) and it was a miserable 245.2rwhp as I remember it. A loss of 100hp through the drivetrain struck me like a brick.

EDIT: Before the Dodge freaks start in, the Ford V10 has the same dilemna and also loses way too much hp in the driveline. I think it's commonly referred to as "OVERRATING the power" by most of us. At least the Ford engine makes good torque though, as a V10 really better do.

How many miles did that truck have on it when you saw it dynoed? The general consensus is that those things gain a LOT of BALLS in the first 5-10k miles....

wait wait wait wait wait......

The new Hemi can't be a 354, it's a 5.7. Wasn't the 354 one of the original hemis?

Bah, where's the OLE MAN when ya need him....

There is a 354 Hemi originally. It seems there is some debate as to whether the new Hemi's displacement is supposed to be rounded off to 353 or 354 cubic inches. Either way, it's closer to 5.8 liters than 5.7.

ooooo......makes sense........

So Dodge makes a 353 and calls it a 5.7, when Ford made a 351 and called it a 5.8? Kinda like the 5.0 that was really a 4.9, eh?

I thought about that too... Which engine did he mean?? Anyway, the current one is a 348 and since they've only made this one in the last 30 years or so, I figured he meant this one. I thought the old one in this range was a 353, but I'm not sure.

Well, no. Fords 351 really is a 5.8 and Dodges 5.7 Hemi is smaller(see above). The "5.0" was only called that because is was really close to being a 5.0L and because "4.9" would've looked goofy on the side!

My mistake, it's a 345. See the note at the bottom of this page for details. Early Hemis included both a 354 (Chrysler) and 345 (DeSoto) but no 353.

the current HEMI engine is actually 345 cu. There was also a original 345 dodge red ram HEMI engine in the 50's

The 354 HEMI was made from 1955- 1959 and was rated at 280 HP. However if you had a engine in a chrysler 300 then it could reach 354 but that was fuel injected and that was very rare to be seen.

Also the current 345 HEMI is rated at 345 HP but that is on the crankshaft.....at the wheels it is less which is around 330 HP or so..

Dodge's website lists the current Hemi as a 348c.u. engine, or at least that's what the window stickers claim.

Anyway, the 345hp rating(except Durango-335) is well over what it makes at the wheels. I've seen one dyno test with a Hemi Ram... 252rwhp. There's no physical possibility of losing only 15hp through the driveline of a regular vehicle such as a pick up truck.

how many miles were on the truck? Everyone says they really open up a LOT after a few thousand miles......

I couldn't tell ya... It was several months ago and I never asked or looked. Surely it was "broke in" though and I'd think it had at least 5,000 miles on it. That said, I think the power was not only low, but much lower than I expected. Perhaps they usually make more. I wouldn't expect to see any reach 290rwhp or more(stock), but I did expect at least right at 270 for a minimum.

well the old hemis came in many different sizes The most common ones were(HP pending on year and carb setup)
331 with 180 - 250 hp
354 with 280 - 355 hp
392 with 325 - 390 hp
426 with 425 hp

there were many other sizes like the mini hemi 6 cylinders most common in Australia I think

The new ones are 345ci(according to my bore and stroke calculator anyway) with 345 hp ram and 335 hp for durango. The extra 5 horse is gained from exhaust differences on the wo vehicles. same engine for both different exhausts.

And yes I have been told that once the hemis has been broken in it kicks out some more power.
