...The KEY hole that is!

I don't want to spend a lot of money on this, but it's getting really annoying. I've been living with this problem for over a year now. The ignition in my Tacoma is busted. The key physically won't turn...worn down tumblers or something. Spare key doesn't work any better. I was stuck at a gas station for 45 minutes tonight.

Should I just replace the whole damn thing, or have a locksmith "rebuild" it?

Any chance you might know where i could look up a part # so I can compare prices?

Thanks in advance!

The problem is, I can't physically turn the key. Trying to turn it using a scredriver won't work unless I use enough force to bust the pins. I've tried spraying WD-40 in there to lube up the pins so they move more freely, but I think they're worn out...still doesn't work. I have to pray every time I get into the truck that the key will turn.

Probably gonna be a dealer item. We dont have a listing for it at work.

I agree, it's a dealer item. I believe they call it a lock cylinder. The one busted on my ol' Lumina a couple of years ago...the thing wouldn't turn off. It should just be a little cylinder that pulls out (depending on where it's mounted, I don't know what you'll have to do to get it out) and you just replace the cylinder. They'll probably give you a new cylinder and keys.

One thing, though, my sister's Honda does the same thing all the time...the key just physically won't turn. What usually works for me is to pull the key out just a little bit and then turn it. It's like the key goes in too far or something. You might try it, it could save you a lot of hassle...

My sister thought about trading the Honda off one time and the trade in evaluator went out to look at it, couldn't figure out how to start it, and came back inside feeling pretty stupid having to ask how to start a car. I went outside, put the key in, pulled it out about 1/16", and it turned just fine.

Tried the "pull it out a hair" trick long, long ago. For a while, the only thing that would work was to make the key "have sex" with the key hole...lube it up, in, out, in, out, in, out, in....then turn.

I noticed that when I sprayed WD 40 in there, my key is coming out really dirty. I think it may just need to be cleaned out real good.

I spoke with a locksmith today. He told me it would be between $50 and $150 to do the repair, and he's not even sure if he CAN do the repair. He did give me a few tips on removal and cleaning. I'll have to try them tonight. Degreaser spray to get all the crud, including the dirty WD 40, and a silicon based lubricant after it's cleaned. Now I just need to figure out exactly how to pull it out of there...

go down to the nearest recking yard pick up a used one also if you have a lot of keys do not put them all on your key ring that is what causes the tumblers to ware out

You dont want to use WD-40 in there. Itll run all over. Its petrol based which means itll clean out your nice oils already in your lock. Eventually itll dry up, then somthing will bust. Use a lithium spray or graphite powder.
