i was wondering what the mechanical limits for a T-5 manual 5-Speed were. i courious because somebody told me that it was 300 lb/ft of torque. i want to swap one into my car but i dont want it to fail when i get more power put into it. any advice would be greatly apperciated.

Since the transmission will be mounted to a chevy, you should be just fine...

i am not sure if the T-5 is what it is called but i am pretty sure if not it is the manual tranny that came in the third gen f-bodys

yes it's the T-5 I dont know about the power rating on it but my sister had one in her 2.8 camaro and she broke it. A friend on mine back home has one bolted to a supposed 383 stroker with 425hp. But he is about as smart as a rock so take it for what its worth. I'd sell it and get the T-56 IMHO

T-5's weren't intended for use behind V8's in the 1st place. I know some people really like them, but their only good quality in my opinion is the fact they're light. Of course, that's also their downfall. They generally don't hold up well to high torque applications. And as a side note, I have shattered 9 of them over the years.

there were 3 used in 3rd gens. The v6 model, the v8 model till 87 and the v8 model from 88-92.

The 88-92 is the "world class" which is stronger than the previous v8 version. 300ftlb is about what the WC version is rated for, not sure about the earlier one.

How well they hold up is a topic hotly debated for years on several websites. The general consensus is that it'll last just fine behind a mild 350 in a street car. If you drag race, it probibly won't last that long, especially if you abuse it. If you auto-x it might last a bit longer than in a drag car.

There are ofcourse some people who break them behind a 150hp 305, and some who have no problems with a 350+hp 350.
I depends on how you drive and any just how lucky you are.

Unfortunatly there aren't any cheap alternatives. A t-10 (in f-bods in 83) is stronger, but its a 4 speed. A t-56 is stronger but costs about 3x as much. I won't even go into the aftermarket.

yea i thought about the T-56 but it just is not cost effective to me. i am only 17 with a low paying job. i have a TH700-R4 w/ a B&M street strip shift kit but i would like a manual more. i soppose i could put my income tax towards one. i would still have to probly save a nice chunk of change to get everything i need for a swap though. anyone know where i can get a cheap T-56 or if i can rebuild a T-5 to withstand more power? i will be drag racing on the weekends.

hey the T-5 will hold up fine unless you drive it like an a55hole a friend of mine has one in his nova its a 400 hp motor and it holds fine except the alum casing is very weak and can not take double clutching drag racing or very hard forced shifts from 5 to 2 or 3 th t-56 is good but will run into prob with headers and they to still wont hold under high horse power drag racing without mods the t-10s are good but like with the others needs mods for racing them how much horses you looking to put out??

What the hell is double clutching?

You may need to lay off the Fast and the Furious

double clutching is not just the fast and the furious i f**king hate that movie and if you dont know what it is you dont know how to drive ask around truck drivers will be able to tell ya

i messed up alittle anyways in the way i put it i ment to say that you have to be able to double clutch because the tranny cant take hard shifts from EX: 5 gear to 2 or 3 there cases are very weak but light sorry for the mess up and i didnt mean double clutch drag racing im not sure what its called but you keep the clutch pushed all the way in rev the motor till you hit your rpm range then pop the clutch out its sounds stupid but ive seen people do it ( not smart ) again sorry for any confusion

89, double clutching is how you used to have to drive all manaul shift cars until God sent us the divine invention we call the 'synchronizer'.

When you double clutch, you shift to neutral, release clutch and either let motor slow down for upshifts or rev it up for downshifts to the RPM needed for the gear you want. What you are doing is you're using the engine to synchronize the gears so you can shift to the next gear you want. Truckers have to double clutch because synchros that can take the mongo torque made by 700+ cu. in. semi-tractor diesel haven't been developed yet.

I don't think double clutching would be useful for drag racing except to just slow you down.
