How much horsepower does anyone thing i have with a '79 chevy 350 with Hedman headers, 3-inch free flow cat, Flowmaster 80 series crosflow muffler, Accel super coil, K&N airfilter with edelbrock air cleaner. and how much would i have if i ported the stock heads to 2.02 intake and 1.60 exhaust, Edelbrock performer intake and performer carb and comp cams 270* advertised duration high energy cam? input would be greatly appreciated.

hmmmm a 79 if its in good condition about 180-190hp? Whats it out of? A vette? If you have the casting # of the heads that would help alot.

If you're lucky... 180 maybe. Heads and cam could make a BIG difference if they are the right combo for your set up and assuming the motor is in good shape.

i have the casting numbers for the heads at my house. i will have to get back to you on that. the last three digits on the back of the block are 010 and that is a 78-79 chevy 350 that came out of either a truck or a corvette. i should have the head #s later today.
thx.

It would be about the same price to go out and buy a set of vortec heads than have those machined. wortech heads are good up to 400hp with minor valve spring work.

I agree with cswrench, the Vortech heads are pretty decent for the price!

While you got the head off you might as well flip it over and put a better set of slugs in it. Lets face it, them late 70s engines wern't famous for high compression.

I gotta agree w/ the other guys here. Go vortec, they are the best bang for the buck.

yea i was thinking about going vortec & jegs has a really good deal on them but someone told me that i would have to get another block because the coolant passages would not line up. is this true or can they bolt right up. i know i would have to get a different intake manifold as well. thanks for all you help to everybody.

Try to find a mutiport injection kit for it, and convert it thats good for easy 80 hp to the wheels. Elobrock and few other companys are making convertion kits for like 2,500 + 500 for intakemanifold.

i have an 88 camaro with a late 70s 350 block with 10.2 comp ratio and the same comp cam 270H cam edelbrock performer intake, and a performer 750 cfm carb and it puts out 300 horses at 5100 ,326 ftlbs of torque at 4600 rpms.I dont think the other guys realize how big of a cam that is and the design is one of the best perfect for good driveablity with lots of horsepower potential. it all depends on what you want to do with the motor do u want reliablity over performance or do you wanna show off to everyone at a streetlight the newer style block and heads are more reliable but they cost more to get alot of horses out of them
what exhaust are you running if not already installed some good headers and roller rockers would really bring that motor screaming to life i do agree with the piston change though because that motor prob only have a 8.5:1 ratio not to good with a healthy cam like the one you have i would get some flat tops You dont have to go forged or anything like that but i wouldnt go to cheap though. but again it all depends on what your wanting to get out of your car and how much your willing to spend

i want a weekend crusier that would beat the better rice out there.(i hate riceburners) i currently have a flowmaster exhaust with a gutted cat and hedman headers. after next week i will have my Edelbrock intake manifold and carb on.

Scoggin Dickey offers a them in several setups and packages. YOu can get them already machined for higher lift valvesprings. Or also with a matched intake, I think they come with an Air gap wich is a good intake. They should have no problem bolting up, they were designed after the LT1 head wich has differnt coolant passages and only work on an LT1 block. But vortecs were designed for the Gen I smallblock.
SDPC

or the heads by themselves

i will really consider VORTEC heads then. jegs say 40hp over stock. that would be nice.

Try this setup, I have a 87 camaro 355 (bored 30) roller cam block that i used Protopline 223-6494-906 vortec heads - the GM hot roller cam -silvolite flattop pistons (beware of the 20 desroked sukkers though) -edelbrok rpm intake manifold for vortec heads- 600 carb -proform full roller rockers (self align) ,headers - proform race distributor (hei) - LOOK pulls hard from 3000 & up and all you need fer street cheaply! GO AND GIT SOME!!
