my 84 camaro has this studder when i tap the gas and it wont go above 4000 rpm. as it misfires really badly, but it runs ok exept for the studder before 4000 rpm. my dad says that there is something wrong with the timing chain, but i think the carb(Quadrajet) might need a rebuild. it also has a pretty nasty sounding exhuast leak on the y-pipe before the cat that i am gonna get fixed pretty quik here. dont know if that might have anything to do with it. any help would be apprciated.
P.S. i turn 18 today!!!

Carb, fuel issue, filter, etc.... It might be your timing, or bad plugs.

Jack up the radiator cap and drive a FORD under it... Problem SOLVED!
I think the issue is bound to be in the ignition (including timing), but that's me. It might be exhaust or a fuel pump or filter problem, but seems to be ignition related most often.

I agree w/ grape, (not about the ford part though.) I would definatly check the ignition module and coil in addition to the other stuff. It sounds to me like its time for a complete tune -up.

Happy birthday, dude!
If you think it's your timing chain going bad on you, you can shoot a timing light at your timing marks on your balancer. If it's erratic as hell, then your chain is thrashed. If it's solid on the timing mark, you need to look elsewhere.
I agree with everyone...complete tuneup...plugs, wires, filters, etc.
Performance Distributors make some killer ignition stuff. Expensive, but killer...Consider it a birthday present!

Another way to check your timing chain is to, remove the dist. cap and crank the engine over back and forth using a 1/2 inch power bar and a 5/8 socket. If it take more than 1/8 of a turn before the dist. rotor starts to move, replace your chain.

Thanks for all the help guys. the previous owner that had the car did not install a timing mark when he put the new engine in there. i went the exhaust works yesterday for my exhaust leak andhe told me that my Catalitic converter is pluged. and that is the noise that i am hearing. i am gonna gut it the find out if it is any better if not then i will check the timing to see if it is all over the place or do a tune up. will get back to you in a couple of days.
P.S. thanks VETTKLR for saying happy birthday.

Gutted the cat and put it back on. wow what a difference. so much faster than it was and it sounds alot more better. when we cut the cat off, we turned the front side down and half the catalyst came out. well i guess that is to be expected when i bottomed out going over 100. just took a little while to catch up with me. i also bought a new edelbrock performer carb with my income tax. i am gonna put that and a new performer RPM intake on sometime in the near future.
