Porsche 968 anyone?

There are some awesome cars for sale out there. This one is going for $16K with only 60,000 or so on the odometer. Not bad for a lightweight machine with a normally aspirated 240-hp four cylinder screamer and six speeds.

The 968 is the end of the 944 evolution, and it has the "lazy eyeballs" of the 928. Besides being a rocket ship, these late model 944 variants are world class supercars available at a very reasonable prices.

I'm presently driving two of these (the 944 variant, major difference being they don't have the variocam) and one has 165,000 miles and runs like a bear, and the other 88,000 and runs better than some cars do when new.

The wife and I are talking about maybe getting a "sports car". The Honda S2000 is a strong candidate (even though we haven't driven one yet), but what pro's / cons are there about the Porsche Boxter???? It's one I'd really like to have, but am afraid of the maintenance costs.

I'm a vintage Porsche guy, the newest one I have is 14-years old. The oldest is 21-years old, so I've been baptized by fire when it comes to maintenance. All of mine are water cooled cars, which I believe handle better than the 911 series, and don't sound like a hair dryer.

I like the Boxster a lot better than the 911 series, as it is a true mid engine car, and a good one. Ask the Ole Man about maintenance, I don't think they are any worse than any other Porsche, which means they are all generally built like Panzer tanks and run forever.

You could get a lot more car for a LOT less money if you went for a 944 cabriolet or 968 cabriolet, providing you want a drop top. I think they're better built than the other cars you noted, and since they went out of production in '95, aren't so old as to be "too old". Maintenance on these will require an association with a good mechanic, as you probably don't want to go to the Porsche dealer, and then they're as reliable as anything else.

Convertible errrrrrr.......cabriolet is a must. Any idea what the market is on 944's or 968's? I mean how available?

Panzers wern't known for thier reliability.

Hey 3SuperSports,

The Boxster is a GREAT little car. Handles well, has enough power and has reasonable looks. A little PRICEY at the get go. As far as service goes. not bad. $110 for an oil change. I just have the 30,000 mile service and it was $679 total. (that was the FIRST service ) come on over and drive it.

The S2000 is a little smaller on the inside, I believe is QUICKER than the Boxster and is MUCH less money. Come on over and I'll let you drive one I hope you like RED

The Z4 is a TOURING car in my estimation. Alot of torque, good handling and very roomy on the inside. AGAIN, come on over and drive it.

Don't have first hand knowledge on the rest, hopes this LITTLE bit helps.

Maybe, that's what he was implying.

My Tulsa buddy's wife has a Boxter. I've never heard anything wrong with it...except that it's a Porsche Boxter.

Thanks Ole Man. I wish I were close enough to you to take you up on the offers. We looked at a Z06 Vette a year or so ago and had put money down on one (in transit), but we backed out. My wife was more intrigued with the Boxter when she found out the Boxter cost about the same. She says Vette's are a dime a dozen, and they are, at least around here.
$110.00 for an oil change? Are you kidding? Is that not a car for a "do-it yourselfer"? I've heard the annual service on Porsche's were a bit rediculus.

Ole man, didn't know you had an S2000? or is that one of the KIDS cars?

Have y'all looked at the 350 Z's? I've seen a dark blue one with aftermarket wheels on the 'net, and it looks awesome.

I'm not too savvy on the sports cars...I'm not sure what's out there anymore. Now, if you were looking for a muscle car...psssst....there's only one choice, Get a Terminator!

...but that would not go well with 3 SS's, would it?

Posted by: GMR

Of all the options listed I would go for either the Z4, 5 Liter V8 right? Gota have the torque. OR the 350Z good looks and quick. Ive heard that the S2000 feels like your driving a Civic untill you hit 8 or 9k RPMs. That would get old REAL fast, driving round town at 9k everyday.

I love the muscle cars, but 1 or 2 should be enough. Like my wife keeps saying (when it comes to cars) "we need to diversify". I'm starting to agree, it'd be fun to have a small, quick, great handling car to buzz around in.

What's a Terminator???

Hey, ole man. Is your Boxter an "S"???
