I just bought a 98 Firebird and the Service Engine Soon Light is on. It has gone off a few times, but keeps turning back on. I tried the gas cap and next I plan to change the quality of gas (after I run out). Any other suggestions on how to get the light turned off, besides going to a shop?

Go to Autozone, they will put a scan tool on it at no charge.

You can turn the light off by reseting your computer.
1) Turn the key in the most forward position without starting the car.
2) Pull PCM BAT and PCM IGN fuses in the engine compartment.
3) Wait a few minutes.
4) Turn the ignition off.
5) Replace the fuses.
If the light comes back on again you should get someone to scan it.

As long as it's not flashing it's not too serious. It will be a sensor. I replaced the knock sensor on my old '99 SS a few months back.
